Tapestry on display
CHARLOTTE — The creative works of
Estelle Spike will be honored during the
month-long observance of the United
Nations’s International Women’s Day and
the U.S. Women’s National History Month
at Talley’s Green Grocery, 1408 East Blvd.
A cheese and wine reception will be
held on May 13 between 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Spike, a new resident of Charlotte, has
been an ex-patriot living and working in
Europe for over 24 years. The main focus
piece during her exhibit is a large three-
panel tapestry/collage that was created by
women and daughters in Charlotte and
women living in Portugal, it was created
for a previous United Nations International
Women’s Day celebration.
Over the last 30 years Spike has been
practicing as a transpersonal psychothera
pist, a professional movement within the
field of psychotherapy that works with the
whole person — mental, emotional, physi
cal, spiritual — and uses a wide range of
approaches, especially creative approaches,
such as visual arts. Her training has includ
ed work with Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, a
pioneer in death and dying disciplines.
She views herself as creator and facili
tator of community celebrations where she
uses the creative tools of collage as a non
threatening visual media. Spike says, “The
participant does not have to think of them
selves as an artist, thus they have more
freedom to explore their creative abilities
and have use of a tool that helps them
express their feelings and ideas on any
topic."
• Along with Spike’s diverse community
interactive pieces, she will be sharing
some of the collages she has made just for
fun. Her pieces utilize as much recyclable
materials as possible. One interesting
piece, entitled “A Charlotte Diversity T-ee,’’
was recently made here in Charlotte to be
auctioned off at Hodges-Taylor Art Gallery
as a fundraiser for Commissioner-at-Large
Jennifer Roberts.

CHARLOTTE — MeckPAC is urging all
LGBT community members and their
allies to write to the Charlotte Observer to
express support for treating city and
county employees fairly. Those who
write should specifically say that sexual
orientation needs to be added to the non
discrimination policy as well as providing
equal benefits for domestic partners. The
Observer ran a lengthy article on individ
ual Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Com
missioners’ (pictured) stand on DP bene
fits with Parks Helms, chair of the
Mecklenburg County Commission, in full
support along with the addition of sexu
al orientation to the non-discrimination
policy.
Send an email to opinion@charlotte

In addition to contacting the Observer,
those who wish to contact their local dis
trict representative to voice concerns
should call or email from the following list.

pation is urgent because those who
oppose equality for LGBT people are
already taking action.
