Arizona gay murder mystery remains unsolved
Female impersonator possibly
victimized by Mannes; death
spawns coalition
by Donald Miller
YUf 'A, Ariz. — Amancio Corrales, a 23-
yeap-old gay man who performed as a
female impersonator under the name
Delilah, apparently died from what is being
described by authorities as “violent trauma.”
According to the Yuma County Sheriff’s
Office (YCSO), Corrales was dressed as a
female while visiting one or more local bars
on the night of May 5 and that it was a "sig
nificant possibility” that he left with people
who thought he was a woman.
According to a website called gayinyu-
ma.com, talk amongst the gay community
there indicates the possibilty that Corrales
was killed by U.S. Marines.
Eyewitness reports place Corrales at a
bar called Ron’s Place in Yuma. While
dressed as a woman, it is reported that he
was seen flirting with a U.S. Marine identified
only as “David.Patrons at the bar that also
the man in question was furious when he
found out Corrales was a male. Corrales was
later seen leaving the bar in a silver Honda
with the suspect and two other men who
also appeared to be U.S. Marines. An unsub
stantiated report indicates
the three men took
Corrales to a location near
Paradise Cove.
It was there — the fol
lowing morning — that he
was found dead, sub
merged in the Colorado
River.
Corrales’ family con
firmed that he was stabbed
in the heart and suffered
severe trauma to the head.
“This act of violence
must be properly investi
gated,” said Michael H.
Baughman, a spokesper
son for the Amancio
Project, a coalition of local
and statewide organiza
tions and concerned citizens.

treat all people with dignity.” ,
The coalition, consisting of the Yuma
County Gay Rights Meetup Group, United
Church of Christ of Yuma, Arizona
Leadership Institute (ALI), Arizona Human
Rights Fund (AHRF), Wingspan, and
Southern Arizona Gender Alliance (SAGA),
formed in order to
build support for the
family of Corrales
and is calling for an
end to all acts of vio
lence perpetrated
against anyone,
regardless of sexual
orientation or gen
der identity.
Coalition mem
bers include organi
zational representa
tives, local citizens,
members of Yuma’s
faith community and
close family ^nd
friends of Corrales.
A graduate of
Yuma High School
and the Yuma School of Beauty, Corrales was
buried last month at Yuma Cemetery in Yuma.
At press time the case remained unsolved.

To the dismay of the anti-gay crusaders, polls
showed rising public support for gay rights throughout
the ’80s and ’90s. As a result, the crusaders began
to rethink their
message. “They
