Greenberg wrote a ground-breaking article
entitled, “Gayness and God: Wrestlings of
a Gay Orthodox Rabbi,” published in
Tikkun Magazine. In response to this article,
Greenberg received many supportive let
ters from Orthodox and non-Orthodox
Jews, gay, lesbian and straight.
in 1996, Rabbi Greenberg was recog
nized as a master educator and was award
ed a prestigious Jerusalem Fellowship which
provided him two years in Jerusalem to
study and to research the biblical and rab
binic attitudes towards sexuality. Once set
tled in Jerusalem, Rabbi Greenbeig founded
a gay men’s study
group, Moah Gavra.
Through it, he met film
maker/director Sandi
Simcha DuBowski in
the beginning of his
efforts to create a docu
mentary film about
Orthodox gay Jews and
so began their collabo
ration on “TVembling Before G-d.” Rabbi
Greenberg led the first United Jewish Appeal
LGBT mission to Israel this past summer.
Rabbi Greenberg will deliver the sermon
at services at the Temple, 5101 Providence
Rd., on Dec. 2, 8 p.m. On Saturday morn
ing, Dec. 3, he will lead Torah study start
ing at 9 a.m. That evening a Havdalah (cer
emony for the end of Shabbat and the
beginning of the week), along with dinner
with Rabbi Greenberg will take place at
6:30 p.m. That will be followed by the pres
entation of “Tbembling on the Road,” a film
and discussion with Rabbi Greenberg,
along with a dessert reception. Services are
free to the public, however, the dinner and
film presentations require tickets.
A pre-event screening of “Trembling
Before G-d” will be held on Nov. 29 at 7
p.m. in the Temple’s social hall. Cost of
tickets are $5 and can be applied to tickets
for the weekend events.

Day of Remembrance to be held
STATEWIDE — In conjunction with other
celebrations, ENC will be fielding informa
tion and ways North Carolinians Can partic
ipate in the Seventh Annual Tbansgender
Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance
was set aside to memorialize those who
' were killed due to anti-transgender hatred
or prejudice. The event is held in November
to honor Rita Flester, whose murder on Nov.
28, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our
Dead” web project and a San Francisco
candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s mur
der — like most anti-transgender murder
cases — has yet to be solved.
Although not every person represented
during the Day of Remembrance was self-
identified as transgender — that is, as a
transsexual, crossdresser or otherwise
gender-variant — each was a victim of vio
lence based upon bias against transgender
people. The event serves to raises public
awareness of hate crimes against transgen
der people, an action that current media
doesn’t perform. It publicly mourns and
honors the lives of the LGBT community’s
brothers and sisters who might otherwise
be forgotten. The vigil is an expression of
love and respect for transgender people in
the face of national indifference and hatred.
Day of Remembrance reminds non-trans
gender people that they are sons, daugh
ters, parents, friends and lovers. It gives
allies a chance to step forward and stand in
vigil, memorializing those who have died
by anti-transgender violence.
