Xriangle area Equality NC PAC announces primary endorsements RALEIGH — Equality NC PAC (ENC) announced April 5 its endorsements in con tested primary races for the state legisla ture. The group, which works to secure equal rights for LGBT North Carolinians, will be supporting nine legislative candidates run ning in the May 2 pri mary election, including seven Democrats and two Republicans. The group also endorsed Mike Nelson, the former mayor of Carrboro and an openly gay candi date for the Orange County Commission. “Our slate for the primary includes a re markable mix of candi dates, from old friends to new leaders,” said Ian Palmquist, the group’s executive director for programs. “We believe it is important for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied community to actively support candidates who believe in justice and equality for all North Carolinians.” “We are especially excited that several moderate Republicans sought our support this year, including two who have earned our primary endorsement,” added Ed Farthing, executive director for development. To develop its slate, the group carefully reviewed the records of the incumbents and surveyed candidates on issues such as employment discrimination, anti-gay vio lence, safe schools, and the proposed anti- LGBT state constitutional amendment. (D) William Brooks (R) Significant Local Race Orange County Commissioner Mike Nelson (D) LGBT workplace advocates summit RALEIGH — The LGBT Workplace Advocates Summit will offer an introduction to the Out and Equal Workplace Advocates organization and their mission, as well as provide participants details on the TMangle’s application to bring the Annual O&E 13 18 38 41 3 19 21 28 35 Workplace Summit, the national LGBT workplace con ference, to Raleigh in 2009. .Discussion topics include the validity of starting a Triangle Out and Equal Affiliate organization to support ongoing workplace equality efforts in N.C. and iden tifying employee representatives from N.C. companies that have formal and informal LGBT employee networks or employees who want to form LGBT employee network groups at their companies. The organizers of the event are Audrey Lin, O&E Workplace Advocates board member and co-chair of the 2005 Denver O&E Workplace Summit: Mandy Carter, national LGBT rights advocate and Durham resident; Ronna Dornsife, Triangle LGBT leader and workplace advocate; and Stephen Jackson from the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau. Creating a culture of peace DURHAM — How can one make this community a safer, saner, more peaceful place to live? How can we help our church or synagogue or mosque to learn to live peacefully with all? For all of the world to coexist we must learn to lay down our sword and shield and study war no more. Come to the weekend-long Training in Non-Violence program and learn how to transform our homes and schools into places of refuge and reconciliation. By participating, you will: • Deepen understanding of what violence is and the principles, practice and power of active nonviolence. • Enhance the ability to nonviolently face those with perspectives hostile to your own. • Learn to analyze the stages successful nonviolent social movements go through and the roles needed for effectiveness in . each stage. • Tap the spiritual roots of nonviolent action and help build a supportive com munity committed to nonviolence. • Identify peace and justice issues of con cern to members of the community, and plan nonviolent projects to address these concerns. The training is highly participatory. Attendees will share their knowledge, experience and stories, while learning from other participants. Expect a variety of small and whole group work, brainstorming, role plays, read ings, video and music. There will also be time and space for private and group reflec tion, meditation, prayer and journaling. The event takes place April 28-30 at the following times: Friday, 5-9 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Host is Calvary United Methodist Church, 304 E.
