G A web of confusion from page 42 And the issues are no less complicated at the birth of a relationship. After encouraging a guy he had been seeing into setting up a Manhunt account, Derek Manino, 32, a health technician in Washington, D.C., was alarmed to find that the man listed his status as “in a relation ship.” Though they had been dating for sev eral months, Manino’s profile still said “sin gle” because they hadn’t had “the talk” yet, he said. “1 freaked out and called my best friend saying things like,T don’t know if I’m ready for a relationship right now.’” Nardicio echoed Manino’s sentiments. “Changing your status to ‘in a relationship’ should only happen after you speak the ‘L’ word.” But that can sometimes come too late. By the time Manino had calmed down enough to amend his own profile, he found out that his boyfriend — having presumably seen Manino’s status — had changed his back to single. Their relationship ended shortly there after. “The only‘L’ word I heard was‘leave,’” lamented Manino. “I think the whole thing is ridiculous,” he continued. “Even when I was freaking out, 1 was thinking, is this really happening? Am I really going to decide this because 1 am unable to have a conversation with my boyfriend about our status, 1 have to look it up online? Has it really come to this?” In a word, yes. And so it requires new eti quette. But even experts can’t agree about what that is. When it comes to break-ups, some believe in a mourning period. Wait a week advises Rave. “You want to give it adequate time to make sure it is a break-up.” But others advocate for quick removal, like a Band-Aid. “As they say, if you wanna sell something, you gotta put it in the front window,” counters Nardicio. “As far as a mourning period, some people call it a cele bration period.” Rules for other post-break-up issues, like deleting photos and comments, are also ambiguous because so much of it depends on the individuals involved. Still, declaring your relationship standing can be illuminating and constructive. “I admit it may have been sort of dramatic to go ahead and change my status so quickly’ said May about his clean break with Dexter. But without it “the relationship may have dragged on and been worse. We may not have been the good friends we are today. “The biggest problem in our roman tic relationship,” he added, “was mis- communication.” I Twin Oaks Campg"ouncl North Carolina’s first private clothing optional campg'ound for men only. www.ourtwinoalc5.com RO. 5ox 175,5onlee, NC 27215 twinoalcs@rtelco.net Re^rve online or call: (717) 7A-2-5205 Jane Kenan A sales professional and 29-year Triangle resident (888) 295-2345 (919) 424-8110 jkenan@mindspring.com Hodge & Kittrell Realtors Psychotherapy For the Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Communities Fear, Loneliness, Coming Out.
