Barney Frank A fiercely intelligent, often outspoken voice in the House of Representatives, Barney Frank has carved out an irre placeable niche in Washington, D.C. His trademark fast- paced speech, humor and understanding have propelled him to the top of the Financial Services Committee, all the while he has remained a positive voice for LGBT Americans in the federal government. Frank has served as representative of Massachusetts’Fourth District since 1981. Prior to his election he worked in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and as chief assistant to former Boston Mayor Kevin White. A graduate of Harvard University in 1962 and Harvard Law School in 1977, Frank dis plays an intelligence that fuels his often-fiery demeanor on the House floor. He was voted outstanding freshman con gressman in a public television survey, and during his tenure he has become a leading progressive voice in the Democratic Party, campaigning for low-income individuals, the elderly and people facing discrimination and against policies like the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Though Frank did not come out publicly until 1987, he had supported gay rights since taking office she years earlier. He was involved in one notable scandal regarding his sexuality. In 1989, Frank’s housekeeper-driver was accused of running a prostitution ring from Frank’s home. The congressman fired the driver when alerted of his behavior by neighbors. Frank cooperated fully with an investigation by the House Ethics Committee, who supported his claim that he was unaware of the situation. Though the incident was used as an elec tion ploy in 1990 by Frank’s opponent, the incumbent congressman carried nearly two- thirds of the district. He has run unopposed since 1992. In the years following the incident, Frank has continued to be a force in Congress through his wit, fearlessness and stature, as well as his gifted speaking style. I Lewis Payton’s perfect * 10’ Photographer releases collection of male images. by Jorge Treviano The number 10 is an iconic number that denotes faultlessness. The men featured in “10,” Lewis Payton’s limited edition collection of iconic male photographs are just that — faultless. “I wanted each of the 10 images [in the book] to depict different representations of ulti mate beaut^’explains Payton of his collection, available now in bookstores nationwide and at www.lewispayton.com. “Obviously all of the models in the shots are physically stunning, but they have distinctly varying personali ties and energy. In TO,’ I strived to cap ture their uniqueness in still images.” Payton believes that because beau ty is in the eye of the beholder and varies depending on a wide array of circumstances, no one man can embody true perfection. “I couldn’t pick a favorite' man in TO,’ says Payton.“However, I can say that I have never seen a more perfect body than that of cover model, Ryan Daharsh. He is a living Greek statue.” Daharsh, featured twice in the col lection (as well as on the cover), had a particular impact on Payton. “I noticed two distinct qualities in Ryan that were equally striking,” Payton recalls. “Therefore, the two images featured in TO’ are in direct contrast with one another. “The cover image is distant, masculine and heroic. The final image of Ryan is intimate, vul nerable and very sensual, almost feminine. Both images have wonderful lines and forms to the body, yet each is embedded with its unique emotional content. Though they are opposite in tone, both images reflect perfection.” Australian born Payton began his career as a journalist. In the late 90s, he lived under ground for a month in Bucharest while shoot ing a documentary on Romania’s unwanted “sewer children.” He then journeyed to the Middle East to film the story of a teenage boy’s imprisonment by Syria’s brutal dictatorship after attempting to escape his homeland. In support of the release of TO,’ Payton has embarked on an international tour of 10 iconic cities — Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Sydney, Cape Town, London, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo and Rio. At each show, he is pre senting an expanded version of TO’ in large format. The exhibit ed collection will feature more of his renowned images along with his portraiture collection. “10” is being issued in a limited run of only 3,000 copies. It retails for $39.1 Model Ryan Daharsh is ‘a living Greek statue.’ Caroiinas 2873 Robinhood Rm Person A Pastor Road Winston SaJem North Carolina 27107 Phone; 336-575-6205 Other: 336-499-6134 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FELLOWSHIP, INC.
