Q - L I V I N G Drag Rag by Miss Della * Contributing Writer Peanut butter fudge, pageants and other delicious news Happy New Year, kids! We’re draggin’ it into 2008 here, trying to round up tidbits about pageants and such, like we’ve been doing for 11-plus years. Sometimes it seems like yester day, and others, much longer than that. At any rate, here I am, carrying on! I wanted to start off by thanking a dear reader, Stephen, who’s a senior at UT-Austin for dropping me a line and befriending an old bitch. He’s a big fan of the art form and sug gested Miss D do a Rag every time the Q-Notes came out. Honey, once a month is enough for this ole gal, but thanks for the vote of confi- . dence. Hope to see your hot little self at some pageant one day. Muah! I had the pleasure of dropping into a holiday party here in Charlotte at the home of Macy Alexander and her part ner Jason. Damn, I’m still dreaming of that peanut butter fudge! They laid out a spread. I was able to visit with sisters Kysha Wellington, Brooklyn Dior, Elaine Davis and her partner, Kiana Lane, Detra Penucci and the ever-popular Angel Austin, a Myrtle Beach legend who now makes her home in the Triad area. Thanks, Macy, for having me over. Our picture this time is a newer promo of Miss Continental PLUS, Tajma Hall. She recent ly has been to such prelims as Miss Shining Star, which the gor geous Chelsea Pearl won. She also was at Miss Florida where Tangelo Armani took the crown with alternate Angela Lovette. Tennessee welcomed her as Miss TN, Raquel Scott, won her pageant with alternate Stephanie Shippae. Also, Miss Heart of America was won by Angel Sheridan’s daugh ter Tiana Sheridan with alter- . nates Patricia Piagette and Vanessa Taylor. Lastly, she headed upto see Miss KY, Mercedes, capture that crown along with her alter nate, Keke Velasquez Lord. I can hardly believe it, but it will be time for Tajma to relinquish her crown in just three-and-one- half months. Time really does fly when you’re getting designer duds made every week, huh, Taj? Tajma tells me while she was in sunny Miami for the Florida contests that Champagne Bordeaux won the “original” contest (y’all know how I hate to say skinny girl or “regular”) and Franchesque Richards won the Elite title. Tajma Hall, Miss Continental PLUS, has been visiting a number of pageants across the country. As for recent Contests, we have Chyna win ning the most recent prelim to Miss NC Unlimited, Miss Winter Wonderland. Over in Fayetteville, Malaysia Black won Spektrum’s Miss Winter Wonderland contest as weU. No confu sion there, right? And, finally, we have a new Miss Night Owls — Needa Samore with first alternate JoAnna Marie Gentry. The old girl can 5fi7/spin,byGod! Other exciting news in a completely different field. It was just aimounced that die Gay U.S.ofA. pageants, based in Pearland, TX, will start producing a Mister US.ofA. and At-Large. The &st ones will take place in gorgeous San Antonio (where the guys are even more gor geous!) on Sept. 17-19. Good news of local interest — the movie “Pageant,” which stars (among others) Victoria Parfcr and Coti Collins, has been chosen as one already been profiled on “The Insider” for the pre-Slamdance excitement. Five clips fi'om the movie were scheduled to air at press time. One last thing we need to do is clarify a couple of bits of information from the story in the last issue on the University of North Carolina-Pembroke’s 10% Society drag show. Morgan Richards should have been listed as a performer and Dana St. James was shown twice in the photographs instead of one of her and one of Amaya. See the correct photos below. So sorry, Morgan and Amaya! Also, Amaya has been secured to host a workshop there for young ladies who plan to compete in the Miss UNC-P pageant this spring.! info: Drop me a line, OK?. The TeaMissD@yahoo.com Dana St. James (below) showed real star power while she twirled her way into the crowd’s heart at Pembroke’s first-ever drag show. of 10 documentaries .for the American Independent Competition at the 17th Aimual Florida Film Festival taking place in and around Maitland begin- .ning March 28 for 10 days. I under stand there were more than 300 submissions. Y’all girls are gettin big time on us. I see — congrats are in order, ladies!
