Pack Eight The Monster Flu The influenza monster came, took our measure, gave us a pretty stern strug gle, and departed, leaving many of us somewhat shaken in muscle and nerve, but—victorious. At the Emergency Hos pital, where the fight was chiefly waged, there were several cases of desperate illness where death seemed only a mat ter of a hair’s weight in the balance; but the scales turned the right way and the grisly monster took his flight. It is impossible to say too much in praise of the work of our physicians, Drs. Moore and Shaver, and of our graduate nurses. Misses Ingle, Pratt, and Mrs. Baldwin. Let us also place high on the roll of honor those girls who when we needed assistants for the nurses cheerfully gave their days and nights to work: Misses Nita Bell, Helen Stokes, Dorothy Mason, Mildred Spen cer, Dorothy Greenlee, and Polly Green lee. Mrs. Smith, of Cherry Street, also left her home and family to help in nursing the sick. It is a pleasure also to speak in this connection of the Club House boys who took turns at sitting up and helping the night nurses. Their good work was, is, and will be deeply appreciated. Our hats are off to Messrs. Ham, Scott, Liles, Rice, Swindell, Lee, Leonard, and Wil liams. A personal reference will perhaps be pardoned. The writer wishes to express his sincere appreciation of the work of those who as far as possible took his duties upon their own shoulders and, while he was in the grip of the “flu,” attended to the immediate pressing tasks of the “welfare man." To Mr. Aiken Moore and Mr. R. V. Richards for their excellent work on the March Bulletin, and to Mr. Ray Clarke and Mr. Thomas Ham for their notable service at the Emergency Hospital, the writer offers his profound thanks and appreciation. Above all, in reverent thankfulness we turn to the Supreme Helper in gratitude for the fact that of the many at the “Emergency” not one case was lost. —F. A. C. An Acknowledgment I wish to express through the Badin Bulletin my gratitude for the kind and helpful attention given me at the Emer gency Hospital while I had the flu. The nurses and helpers were all so good, and gave us just the sort of attention that we needed. I feel that the Com pany was very kind to fix us up a place where we could be taken care of, and which probably saved the lives of several. A Helpful Talk The address of Mr. Brown, State Di rector of Vocational Work, to the mem bers of our night school^ classes, was full of sound sense and inspiration. He emphasized the need of teaching our boys and girls the knowledge of wholesome, practical things that belong to everyday life. It is more important for a girl to know how to select and prepare a balanced, nutritious, wholesome meal than to know all the Latin and Greek in creation. Let us help spread the gos pel of health and properly selected and rightly prepared food. Mr. Thorpe to Address Legion The Eddie Sledge Post, which is the name of the Badin post of the American Legion, will meet at the Legion head quarters over the Stanly Clothing Com pany (old stand), next Thursday even ing, April 15, at eight o’clock. Mr. J. E. S. Thorpe will speak. All ex-service men, whether members of the Legion or not, are invited to be present. Mr. Fickes in Badin Mr. E. F. Fickes, of Pittsburgh, vice- president of the Aluminum Company of America, was with us for a few days recently, his visit being concerned with business of the Company. On a trip through the country, Mr. Fickes found a fine sample of longleaf pine which he sent to Mrs. Fickes, this tree being somewhat of a curiosity in Pennsylvania. mTrET-BUTsmH iMiiitfaWttiiii
