Navy as the PBM-3. Designed for long-range operations, it is equipped to stay away from its base for protracted periods. It has gull-shaped wings, toed-in twin rudders and a sharp dihedral on tail planes, and is powered by two Wright air cooled engines. The "Mariner” is heavily armed—having guns on top, on both sides, in the nose and on the underside of the rear hull. It can f'e usf’d for convoy duty or to scout far ahead of surface fleet operations, Helldivers Hold Top Spot In Squad Sports Program By Cadet H. Wesley Bogle The Helldivers with a record of eight victories and one tie in ten starts held the lead in squadron sports competi tion as of Saturday, Sept. 26. In second place were the Catalinas just half a point behind the league- leaders. The Skyrockets with GVz points were in the third spot. The Helldivers attainel first place with two wins in boxing, one victory and one defeat in wrestling, three wins and a tie in soccer, and two victories in military track. Ths record gained for them the squadron liberty award for last Sat urday. Liberty awards were also granted to the Buccaneer military track team and to the twenty-two in dividual winners of regimental cham pionships. When wrestling was temporarily dis continued after last week’s competition three teams were tied for first place with two wins and no losses. They were the Buffaloes, Buccaneers, and Vindi cators. diinktlvats It tastef s ^ YOU ^0° . The only undefeated and untied soc cer team was the Catalinas with four victories. Closely following were the Helldivers and Skyrockets who have won three and tied one. The Helldiver, Coronado, and Buc caneer military track teams had each won two meets to create a deadlock for leadership in that division. Interesting to note is that the Devas tators, who annexed squadron honors for the summer period, were in last place with only two points, both gar nered by their soccer team. The kick- off is slated for 3 o’clock and a large crowd should be on, hand to witness the renewal of the annual contest. The entire cadet corps will be the guests of the University at the game. Indications point towards another thriller similar to the one staged last year when the Gamecocks came from behind to nip the Tar Heels, 13-7. Coach Rex Enright’s T-formation grid machine has always been hard for the Tar Heels to stop and the Gamecocks will rate as a slight favorite. Last Sat urday South Carolina held the vaunted Vols from Tennessee to a scoreless tie while Carolina was upseting a strong Wake Forest club so the fur should really fly today. Fans and coaches alike are hoping for good weather to prevail today so that both teams can open up and ope rate on all cylinders. The Gamecocks will bring to Chapel Hill a compara tively light club that counts speed and deceptiveness as its main assets. They boast a well-balanced team with able, experienced men in most key positions and despite the loss of triple-threat star Stan Stasica to the service, they wield a potent attack that will be hard to smother. Leading the Gamecock offense will be the powerful, all-around veteran Ken Roskie who is rated one of the toughest men to stop in the south. He will be ably aided by a 147-pound scat- back, Mouse Halsall, who shone against Tennessee last Saturday. One of the top duels of the day will be between All-American candidate Lou Sossamon of South Carolina and RADIOS FOR RENT BOOKS FOR SALE The Intimate Bookshop Main Street, 0pp. the Campus Try CAROLINA PHARMACY The Rexall Store PHILIP LLOYD, Prop. Both are out standing centers and should wage a merry battle for top individual honors in the game. The Tar Heels will be nearly at full strength for the Gamecock invasion. Sophomore George Sparger and vete ran tackle Bob Heymann who have been sidelined with injuries will be in uniform and available for limited duty. The rest of the team is in top physical shape and eager for revenge against their rivals from South Carolina. Practically the same eleven which started against Wake Forest will open the contest this afternoon. Jack Hus sey and Craven Turner will be in at the flanking positions, Ed Michaels and Joe Wolf at the tackle posts. Co-cap tain Tank Marshall and soph Ralph Strayhorn will open at the guard spots, while Chan Highsmith will be in at center. In the backfield, Hugh (Shot) Cox, hero of the triumph over the Deacons last Saturday, will probably start at the tailback spot. Cox, who was in jured on the final play of last week’s game has fully recovered and is set for plenty of action against the Game cocks. Clay Croom or Bill Sigler will be in at the fullback post while co-cap- tain Joe Austin and ace booter Mike Cooke will start at the wingback and blocking back positions. 1st High School V-5 Cadet Cadet George J.
