Comptroller Carmichael spoke of the fine associations he has had with “Scrappy.” “We know you’re a sea going sailor,” he told the skipper, “and so we’re glad you’re going to sea.” Relating how Vice Admiral Halsey had personally requested the services of Comdr. Kessing, Capt. Popham stated that there is now and never would be but one Scrappy. In part, Comdr. Tom Hamilton stated that, “I consider one of the finest things ever to happen to me was for my Naval career to start under Comdr. 0. 0. Kessing. I have served under him on several occasions, and I feel that you men who have served under (Continued from page one) him here are just as proud as I am. I consider him the finest Naval officer in our ranks today.” Lt. Comdr. John P. Graff paid Comdr. Kessing high tribute, and pre sented him with an Atmos clock, a gift from the officers, cadets, crew, and civilian personnel. Comdr, Kessing, who has spent 22 of his 32 years of Naval service at sea, thanked Chapel Hill citizens, Univer sity officials and students for their “excellent cooperation” and bid good bye to the officers and men of the Pre- Flight School with the challenge to “keep giving your best to the service and we’ll win this war like we’ve won all those in past history.” “No matter where I go, I’ll never let Greeting Cards Books Souvenirs Fountain Pens Christmas Gifts Stationery Jewelry Ties at the A!
