Saturday, December 19, 1942 CLOUDBUSTER Six Cadets Chalk Up Five New Intramural Marks in Rain f Cloudbusters Lose Opening Game to Appalachian, 53-46 BAD WEATHER didn’t stop these six cadets from setting up five new intramural track records last week. Top photo, left to right, ^hows Austin Kellam jumping the low hurdles, Francis O’Donnell running the obstacle course, and Adolph Kissell dribbling a basketball. Kellam, a member of the Devastator squadron, broke two records and helped to break a third. His time of 15 seconds in the 120-yd low hurdle event broke the old record of 15.1 seconds, and in the running broad jump he set a new record of 19 ft., 6 inches to top the previous mark of 18 ft., 9% inches. O’Donnel of the Wildcats set a new obstacle course record of three minutes, six seconds to top the old mark of three minutes, nine seconds. Kissell, former Chicago Bears halfback and now a member of the Buccaneer squadron, threw the 12 pound shot 48 ft., five inches to top the previous mark of 44 feet, 11 inches. The reason for the basketball pose is that Kissell was trying out for the varsity squad when the photographer found him. Lower photo shows record holders in half-mile medley relay. Members of the Devastator squadron, their time was one minute, 43.1 seconds. Pic tured, left to right, they are Austin Kellam, John Osterlund, Frank Jones, and Charles Scranton, Jr. Merry Christmas from the UNFVERSITY CLEANERS i4 cross from Post OfRce CALL US We do only quality work—our prices are reasonable. Several showed up late one after noon this week, and it resulted in their running around the obstacle course after the others had finished for the day. Furthermore, they were told they could come down on Saturday af ternoon if it happened again. Until Cadet Center Howard McWil liams fouled out of the Navy Pre- Flight-Appalachian State Teachers College game here Wednesday after noon, the local quintet were having things very much their own way. From that point on, though, things got worse, and the final score found the locals on the short end of a 53 to 46 score. Early in the first period the Cloud busters led, 15 to 5, but at halftime the visitors came within one point of tying up the ball game. Early in the second period Hawkins and Smawley made two snowbirds to give Appalachian a lead they never lost. The all-cadet team showed signs of brilliance at times, but lack of capable reserves, bad passing, and teamwork left much to be desired. McWilliams was perhaps the outstanding per former, both on offense and defense. He scored 10 points during his short i stay in the game, and took numerous | balls off the opponents’ backboard. Warren Hawkins and Belus Smaw ley led the scoring for the winners with 16 and 13 points respectively. Cap tain Gus Broberg was top scorer for the Pre-Flighters with 13, followed by Master son with 11. Appalachian brought 15 men here for the game, but the five who started went the route, no substitutes being used. Score at Half: Navy Pre-Flight 30; Appalachian 29.
