Page Two CLOUDBUSTER Friday, January 1, 194S Cadet Aiello Still Does Art Work While Taking Pre-Flight Training IT WAS ALL A SURPRISE and a most pleasant one at that when Cadet Gene Aiello, artist extraordinary, presented a colored portrait of Comdr. John P. Graff to Mrs. Graff. The presentation was made at a Public Relations dinner held at the Carolina Inn before the Christmas holidays. Shown here, left to right, are Comdr. Graff, Mrs. Graff, the picture, and Cadet Aiello. Cadet Gene Aiello, of the 13th Bat talion, thought that his past had been left in the Bronx (he’s from Brooklyn and proud of it) when he boarded a New York train for Chapel Hill back in late November. Now he admits he’s been almost as busy here with his for mer occupation as he is with the V-5 program. Like the other cadets, he goes through the daily grind of the Pre- Flight School. He meets formations, takes hikes, attends classes, partici pates in the various sports, training to become a Navy flier for Uncle Sam. Time off finds him doing a cartoon for the Cloudbuster, gift portraits of Pre- Flight officers, or perhaps planning mural artwork for the new administra tion building. The week Aiello came aboard Lt. Comdr. B. H. Micou was departing for his new duties on the staff of the Air Technical Training Command at Chi cago, 111. Those who had worked with the supply officer wanted someone to do a portrait of him. Aiello was draft ed for the job, and the result was no less than a masterpiece. Weekly cartoons for the Cloud buster, a portrait of the captain, and several other pictures have been finish ed by Aiello during the past month. He expects to do more before he leaves FOR YOUR PLEASURE— WE’RE OP£iV AS USUAL MARLEY’S EVERY NITE EXCEPT MONDAY SUNDAY MONDAY PHILIP DORN “REUNION IN FRANCE” Tuesday RALPH BELLAMY EVELYN ANKERS “GREAT IMPERSONATION” —Wednesday-Thursday— ROBERT LARAINE YOUNG DAY JOURNEY FOR MARGARET” —Friday-Saturday— GENE GEORGE TIERNEY MONTGOMERY LYNN BARI “CHINA GIRL” with VICTOR McLAGLEN — ALAN BAXTER Chapel Hill—but no more requests for portraits, please. Until Aiello enlisted in the V-5 pro gram he was a member of the Coast Guard Reserve. He says, however, that this phase of the service was un interesting, and that he wanted more action. V-5 seemed to be the answer, he says, for he’s anxious to get duty in the Pacific just as soon as he com pletes his training, Aiello is an artist who never attend ed art school. From 1932 to 1934 he took regular college work at CCNY in New York. Then came a, chance to go to work for United Artists Corpora tion, and he took it, doing publicity work for them all over the country. There was no art work connected with the job, but Aiello did some pic tures on the side for his friends and others with whom he was working. In 1938 Paramount offered him a job in their art department in Holly wood, and since then he’s been busy with paper and pencil. A year at Para mount, and he went with Buchanan & Company, Paramount’s advertising agency. There he was assistant art director. After Buchanan came the Coast Guard, and now the Pre-Flight School, While at Paramount and with Buchanan & Company, Aiello had such notables as Mrs, Eleanor Roosevelt, Vivian Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Ve ronica Lake, Lucille Ball, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., among others, pose for pictures. Aiello’s knowing the movie stars has been a source of interesting fun for his roommates. The first week they were here Aiello let them name their favorite movie star, and he wrote and got special autographed pictures for the room. Veronica Lake sent her love to Bob Stitt, Paulette Goddard sent best wishes to Marty Tiernan, and Susan Hayward sent sighs to “Crickets” Laggren. Speaking about those roommates Aiello thinks they’re the best at the See CADET AIELLO, page 6 ■ NOT AT NO. 1! It’s one of Britain’s best naval planes, the Fairey “Fulmar,” a two-place, low-wing fighter. The leading edges of the wings of this plane are swept back sharply. The trailing edges are swept back , also, but at a smaller angle. The long nose and fuselage are tapered to a point. The tapered tailplane has rounded tips. FIRE AT NO. 2! It’s the Japanese Mitsubishi “Soyokaze,” a twin engine, mid-wing bomber. Points of recognition are: the nose of the fuselage extends ahead of the engine nacelles; the wings untapered on the leading edges and swept forward on the trailing edges; the tapered tailplane with twin fins and rudders; and the long thin fuselage.
