Riding in on the heels of a pre-mature Christmas whirling snowstorm, the old man with the white whiskers stopped by the Pre-Flight School just about a week ahead of schedule and left in his wake a number of little guard houses, set up at the outlying sentry posts surrounding the station. Leaving no stone unturned in helping to provide for the warmth and comfort of cadets who had heretofore stood five-hour watches unpro tected from the elements, old Saint Nick enlisted the aid of the univer sity carpenters, the support of the military department, and a little in genuity—setting up the wooden frame houses in no time at all. In return ol’ Kris Kringle accepted the hearty thanksgiving of Cadet Stewart Aycock, 14th Battalion member from Charlotte, N. C., shown smilingly pointing his watch club at the newly christened shack. Try CAROLINA PHARMACY The Rexall Store PHILIP LLOYD, Prop. CADET AIELLO (Continued from page two) station. Stitt is from Glen Ellyn, 111., and attended Colgate before coming to Chapel Hill. Laggren attended Wes leyan University and hails from Engle wood, N. J., and Tiernan is a Prince ton graduate, class of 1939. His home is in Essex Falls, N. J. While we were visiting Aiello’s room, Laggren told us about the trip down from New York. “We were told,” said Laggren, “that we were to meet Aiello and he would have charge of the cadets coming down. He was dressed in a pin stripped suit, and looked a bit older than the rest of the cadets. Most of us thought he was some railroad of ficial assigned to look after us. We didn’t find out he was just another cadet until we were well on our way. From that point we started calling him Butch, and stopped saying no sir, Mr. Aiello, yes sir, Mr. Aiello.” Cadet Aiello should make a good pilot, because he loves to fly. He’s al ready proven that he’s a real artist. “If he learns to fly half as well as he draws, he’ll win the war by himself in six months,” someone recently remark ed after seeing one of Aiello’s original pictures. SPORT SLANTS (Continued from page five) Pre-Flight Schools will use all the in fluence they can to continue intercol legiate and interscholastic athletics to develop a competitive spirit and com bative attitude of a type that will wi’i the war. >is Should Coach Dyk« Raese care to talk about his West Virginia Univer sity basketball teams, Ensign John Barr shouldn’t be around. While at Penn State Barr competed against West Virginia three times, and on his Public Relations Office questionnaire he had this to say: “I competed against Raese’s West Virginia Univer sity teams three times while I was at Penn State. All the games were for extra periods, one of them going for three extra periods. P. S.—Penn State won them all.” Wedding bells will ring Jan. 9 for Lieut. Frank L. Durham Coca-Cola Bottling Company j Drink Cadet Dance for January Faces Cancellation There is some doubt at this writing as to whether the monthly cadet dance scheduled for Jan. 9 in Woollen Gym nasium will be held. Reason for the uncertainty, accord ing to Lieut. Frank L. Gillespie, as sistant welfare and recreation officer, is that the University of North Caro lina basketball team is scheduled to play Wake Forest College in the gym that evening. Unless an unexpected solution is found, the cadet dance for January will be cancelled, Lieut. Gil lespie stated. Hodgkins New Personnel Officer; Changes Made In Military Department Lieut, (jg) Edward R. Hodgkins has been named as the new personnel officer of the station, replacing Lieut, (jg) John J. Waybright, who has been detached. Lieut. Hodgkins’ former duties as senior watch officer have been taken over by Lieut. Edwin W. Greene, a former battalion officer. Other changes in the military de partment leave Lieut. Thurman R. Ward as officer in charge of odd-num bered battalions, replacing Lieut, (jg) John E. Hollis, and Lieut, (jg) Gerald R. Ford, Jr., as officer in charge of even-numbered battalions, replacing Lieut. R. C. T. Brown, detached. Lieut, Hollis is now the officer in charge of military instruction. NRAB Becomes NAS Effective today, all Naval Reserve Aviation Bases, except those at Ana- costia, D.
