Saturday, January 9, 1943 CLOUDBUSTER Page ’Busters Meet Long Island In New York Defeat LaSalle, Lose to Duke, This Past Week Another intersectional opponent will face the Cloudbusters tonight when Long Island University meets the Pre- Flighters in New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Making the trip were nine players, namely, Captain Gus Broberg, John Barr, Forest Kendall, Kenneth Ha- shagen, Bernard SchifFer, Carl Free man, Bob Masterson, Howard McWil liams, and John Kraft. The team left here Thursday night, and arrived in New York yesterday morning. They are staying at the Ho tel Pennsylvania, and will return here tomorrow. Win Over LaSalle A victory over LaSalle College at Philadelphia in an overtime tilt, 41-39, and a loss to Duke’s Blue Devils here, 51-48, marked the play of the Pre- Flight Cloudbusters this past week. Both games were nip and tuck af fairs, the outcome always in doubt un til the final minute of play. In the overtime tilt at Philadelphia, LaSalle apparently had the game well in hand when it led, 33-31, with a little over a minute to play. But at this point, Dartmouth’s record-breaking scorer, Cadet Gus Broberg, fired a set shot to deuce the count and sent the game into overtime. Broberg, no ball of fire until this point, also was the hero of the over time action. He first stuck up a long one-hander, but Thompson matched it with two minutes left. Cadet Masterson pushed the Cloud busters out in front again with a set stab, but LaSalle’s Kwasny quickly cut the edge to a point with a foul shot. Again it was Broberg, this time on a scoring pass from out of bounds. But then Kwasny dumped another foul, and it was only 39-37 with a minute to play. A perfect pass from Kraft to Penn State’s Johnny Barr put the game on ice with 30 seconds left to play, and La Salle’s final two points in the last 15 seconds went for naught. Until midway the second period the Cloudbusters couldn’t get started, but at this point the proteges of Lt. (jg) Dyke Raese snapped out of their lethargy and went to town. Broberg's 13 points—two. field goals in the first and second half and two in the overtime—paced the victors. (jg) Dyke Raese, head basketball mentor, and the Cloudbustars who will play against Long Island University tonight in Madison Square Garden, New York. In the picture are, left to right, top row, John Barr, former All-American center at Penn State, Captain Gus Broberg, former Dartmouth captain and leading Ivy League scorer in 1940 and 1941, and Forest Kendall, former Davis-Elkins star; second row, Robert Masterson of Syracuse, and Howard McWilliams, former Penn State captain and center; and third row, Walter Hoffman of Roman-Catholic high in Philadelphia, and John Kraft, St. Joseph. In the bottom row are Kenneth Hashagen of the University of Pennsylvania and Bernard Schifi'er, former CCNY ace. Needless to say, the handsome gentleman in the center is Coach Raese. The picture on the left is that of Cadet James G. Sturgis, Penn State graduate who served as team man ager until he completed his Pre-Flight training here this week.
