/'age Six CLOUDBUSTER Saturday, January 9, 1943 Varsity Wrestlers Meet Navy This Afternoon at Annapolis Back in August Lieut. Charlie Spei del, head wrestling' coach, had one of the finest wrestling teams in the coun try. Headed by such former inter-collegi ate champions as Bob Schacheman of Franklin and Marshall, and Bill Lev ering of Penn, it could have provided tough competition for most of the top teams in the country. But as the Pre- Flight program works, those wrestlers have gone on to take their primary training, and as things now stack up Coach Speidel has a wrestling schedule and few experienced wrestlers. This afternoon at Annapolis the team opens its season against Navy, one of the top eastern teams, and Speidel has two wi’estlers on his squad with previous college competitive ex perience. A Pre-Flight wrestling coach whose team participates in college competi tion has a real problem. Wrestling weights start at 121 pounds and go to the heavyweight division, which is un limited. Picture this against the weight of the cadets (most of whom are from 135 to 180) and a real prob- lem arises. Only members of the squad with previous wrestling experience are Sam Mordecai, 155, former University of North Carolina ace, and E. R. Bensen, 175, of University of Pennsylvania. Bensen attended college but two years, but while at Mepham high school in Bellmore, N. Y. he was considered one of the best high school wrestlers in the country. His former high school coach, Lieut, (jg) Frank Gardner, is now helping Speidel with the Pre-Flight wrestlers. Other meets will be scheduled, but as this is written only four are definite. Appalachian State Teachers College comes here on Jan. 20, North Carolina State comes here on Feb. 10, and VPI comes here on Feb. 15. Expected to wrestle at Annapolis this afternoon are Charles Armstrong, 121; Nick Ozog, 128; Charles Dorn, 136; W. H. Staton, 145; Sam Mordecai, 155; Jerry Hendershot, 165; E. R. Bensen, 175, and at the heavyweight spot either Jack Williams or Jack Lansburg. f ANOTHER VARSITY SPORT enters outside competition when Lieut. Charlie Speidel’s wrestling team goes against Navy this afternoon at Annapolis. Pictured here, left to right, first row, they are S. F. Mordecai, J. J. Lansburg, J. G. Williams, and R. E. Bensen; second row, Coach Speidel, Nick Ozog, W. H. Staton, J. M. Hendershot, D. J. McKeeby, C. A. Dom, and C. B. Armstrong. HUMOR (Continued from page three) She: I’m scared; this is the very spot where my father proposed to mother. He; Well, what about it? She: Well, on the way home, the horse ran away and father was killed. * Then there is the one about the girl they all called Stalingrad, because she’s so hard to take. * * A sailor who had completed 30 years of faithful service retired with a com fortable fortune of $60,000. He amassed this large sum through his courage, enterprise, initiative, mili tary efficiency, the careful investment of his savings, and the death of an uncle who left him $59,999. Navy personnel, both civilian and military, invested more than $100,000,- 000 in war bonds during 1942, the Navy Department reported last week. Civi lian personnel attained the goal set by the Secretary of the Navy, with more than 90% of such employees investing more than 10% of gross payrolls in bonds. The cincher came seconds later when Carver scored again, this time on another crip. Carver paced Duke’s attack with 13 points, one tally more than was scored by Bob Gantt and Bubber Seward. Masterson, Kraft and Broberg were the big guns for the Pre-Flight outfit with 15, 12 and 10 points respectively. Neither team was ever ahead by more than four points, the score being tied at halftime 26-26. The box scores: LaSalle G F P E.
