Noted Athletes Begin V-5 Officer’s Training
NAVAL CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS replace diamond lore and
strategy as the center of interest for Lieut. Hal Schumacher (left)
and Lieut. Charlie Gehring*er, former big league baseball stars
who last week began their indoctrination as new V-5 instructors
at Chapel Hill. Rated among the best second sackers ever to play
in the major leagues, Gehringer achieved his brilliant record with
the Detroit Tigers from 1926 to 1942. Schumacher, the Prince Hal
of the MoGraw-Terry-Ott regimes, went to the Polo Grounds in
1931 fresh from the campus of St. Lawrence University, and stayed
on to become an important mound fixture with the New York
Giants.

Indoctrination
From north, south, east and
west, some 130 new V-5 officers
came aboard last week to begin
a one-month indoctrination course
that will prepare them for their
wartime job of training future
clou-dbusting pilots for the Navy.
Topping the list of prominent
figures from the athletic world are
Lieut. Charlie Gehringer, star sec
ond baseman with the Detroit
Tigers for many years, and Lieut.
Hal Schumacher, right handed
chucker for the New York Giants
since 1981.
Professional football players in
the group include Ensigns Richard
Todd and Ed Cifers of the profes
sional champion Washington Red
skins, and Ensign Raymond Bray
of the Chicago Bears.
Among the professional coaches
found on the roster of new V-5 in
structors is Lieut. William Ed
wards, former grid director of the
Detroit Lions, who is now lining
up shoulder to shoulder with men
he formerly tried to outwit and
outmatch.
College athletic leaders aplenty
today are stretching creaking
muscles as part of the condition
ing program that is teaching them
the Navy way of doing things,
which they in turn will later pass
on to aviation cadets.
From Georgia’s triumphant
Bulldog Rose Bowl club, have come
assistant coaches Lieut. J, V.
Sikes and Lieut, (jg) H. Thorpe
Hollis, along with fellow southern
mentors Lieut, (jg) J. McDowall,
head coach at Rollins; Lieut, (jg)
L. A. Spearman, head coach at
Davidson; Lieut, (jg) John Fen-
lon, varsity football coach at the
University of Richmond; Lieut.
J. H. Rowland, pigskin coach at
the Citadel, and Lieut, (jg) A1
Werner, football line and head
baseball coach at William & Mary.
In from the west and down from
the north, there are Lieut. Wade
E. Marlette, head football, base
ball and basketball man at Bates
College; Lieut, (jg) Clyde F. Car
penter, director of football and
basketball at Montana Univer
sity; Lieut. Otis Whit Douglas,
director of athletics and varsity
football coach at Akron Univer
sity; Lieut, (jg) George R. Cole,
grid leader of the porkers at the
University of Arkansas, and
Lieut. Frank Cappon, line foot
ball and head basketball coach at
Princeton.
They’re Navy men now, and af
ter their indoctrination will direct
their experience and skill toward
turning out the toughest and best
fighting pilots in the world.
Lieut. Vvilliam C. Clark, aide to
the executive officer, is the officer
in charge of the V-5 instructor in
doctrination course. Lieut, (jg)
Edward Masavage is in charge of
athletics, and Lieut, (jg) Alex
ander Cloud is supervising' the
academic phase of the course.
Platoon officers are Lieut, (jg)
Joseph McCabe, and Ensigns John
Economos, William Krywicki, and
