Hal Schumacher (left) and Lieut. Charlie Gehring*er, former big league baseball stars who last week began their indoctrination as new V-5 instructors at Chapel Hill. Rated among the best second sackers ever to play in the major leagues, Gehringer achieved his brilliant record with the Detroit Tigers from 1926 to 1942. Schumacher, the Prince Hal of the MoGraw-Terry-Ott regimes, went to the Polo Grounds in 1931 fresh from the campus of St. Lawrence University, and stayed on to become an important mound fixture with the New York Giants. Legion Commander To Address Cadets Col. Roane Waring, of Mem phis, Tenn., national commander of the American Legion will ad dress the regiment of cadets in Memorial Hall next Monday at 1300, Comdr. John P. Gralf, com- Colonel Waring manding officer of this station, has announced. Present plans call for the na tional commander to arrive at Chapel Hill on Monday morning, inspect the Pre-Flight School briefly, and then lunch with the cadets in Lenoir Dining Hall. Col. Waring’s excellent military vecord should serve as fine back- gi'ound for his talk to the cadets. He enlisted in the Tennessee Na tional Guard as a private in 1904, and retired as major in 1913. In IS'IT he was delegated by his gov- ^ bi'nor to help organize the Second Tennessee Infantry which became part of the 30th Division. See WARING, page U Baseball, Grid Stars Undergo Indoctrination From north, south, east and west, some 130 new V-5 officers came aboard last week to begin a one-month indoctrination course that will prepare them for their wartime job of training future clou-dbusting pilots for the Navy. Topping the list of prominent figures from the athletic world are Lieut. Charlie Gehringer, star sec ond baseman with the Detroit Tigers for many years, and Lieut. Hal Schumacher, right handed chucker for the New York Giants since 1981. Professional football players in the group include Ensigns Richard Todd and Ed Cifers of the profes sional champion Washington Red skins, and Ensign Raymond Bray of the Chicago Bears. Among the professional coaches found on the roster of new V-5 in structors is Lieut. William Ed wards, former grid director of the Detroit Lions, who is now lining up shoulder to shoulder with men he formerly tried to outwit and outmatch. College athletic leaders aplenty today are stretching creaking muscles as part of the condition ing program that is teaching them the Navy way of doing things, which they in turn will later pass on to aviation cadets. From Georgia’s triumphant Bulldog Rose Bowl club, have come assistant coaches Lieut. J, V. Sikes and Lieut, (jg) H. Thorpe Hollis, along with fellow southern mentors Lieut, (jg) J. McDowall, head coach at Rollins; Lieut, (jg) L. A. Spearman, head coach at Davidson; Lieut, (jg) John Fen- lon, varsity football coach at the University of Richmond; Lieut. J. H. Rowland, pigskin coach at the Citadel, and Lieut, (jg) A1 Werner, football line and head baseball coach at William & Mary. In from the west and down from the north, there are Lieut. Wade E. Marlette, head football, base ball and basketball man at Bates College; Lieut, (jg) Clyde F. Car penter, director of football and basketball at Montana Univer sity; Lieut. Otis Whit Douglas, director of athletics and varsity football coach at Akron Univer sity; Lieut, (jg) George R. Cole, grid leader of the porkers at the University of Arkansas, and Lieut. Frank Cappon, line foot ball and head basketball coach at Princeton. They’re Navy men now, and af ter their indoctrination will direct their experience and skill toward turning out the toughest and best fighting pilots in the world. Lieut. Vvilliam C. Clark, aide to the executive officer, is the officer in charge of the V-5 instructor in doctrination course. Lieut, (jg) Edward Masavage is in charge of athletics, and Lieut, (jg) Alex ander Cloud is supervising' the academic phase of the course. Platoon officers are Lieut, (jg) Joseph McCabe, and Ensigns John Economos, William Krywicki, and Louis Young. Free Movie for Cadets “New York Town” with Fred MacMurray and Mary Martin will be the feature attraction at the free movie showing for cadets to day at the Village Theatre. Of special interest to the cadets will be a movie short on the “Battle for Midway.” The feature will start at 1330, 1515, 1930 and 2115.
