(jg) Kenneth Hashagen, with 20 points, led the Navy Pre- Flight officers’ basketball team to a 53-34 victory over Wake Forest here Monday night. It was the second win for the officers who defeated N. C. State in their opening game, and then dropped a 59-33 decision to Duke at Durham. With Ensign John Barr, Lt. (jg) Rex Pyles, Lt. (jg) Whitey . . . he scored 20 .. . Kendall, and Hashagen getting most of the balls on rebounds, the officers were ahead 20 to 9 at half- time, and had complete charge of the game all the way. Nine field goals and two foul shots made up Hashagen’s 20 points. Barr with five field goals 3^nd 10 points was second in scor- followed by Pyles with four field goals and one foul shot for a total of nine. All the officers who participated -Lieut. Ed Green, Ensign Bill Krywicki, Ensign Bill McCachren, Ensign Ed Young, and Ensign Robert Titchenal along with the aforementioned Hashagen, Barr, Pyles, and Kendall—played out standing defensive ball. Kendall 3-nd Krywicki scored four points apiece, McCachren had three, Gi'een two and Titchenal one. Officers’ Basketball League A total of 55 officers compose the six officers’ basketball teams ''^hich start play next week. All Sames are scheduled for the Tin ^an, and will start promptly at 2000. Each team in the six team ^6ague will play five games, the fi^st of which are scheduled for this coming Tuesday night. Open- games see the Battleships vs Cruisers, Destroyers vs the ^inesweepers, and the Submarines Minesweepers, and the Sub- ^arines vs the Carriers. S. Navy Pre-Flight’s bas ketball quintet here Thursday af ternoon, 35 to 25, but the high ranking visitors failed to impress a crowd estimated at 2,000. Starting out slow the Duquesne quintet was never ahead by more than five points until the final 10 minutes. At that stage Fredericks and Lapinsky each scored two field goals to put the game on ice. Thanks to Warren Hampcher, who led the losers’ scoring with 10 points, the Navy club held an 8 to 5 lead after seven minutes had passed in the first period. Then Coach Chuck Davies of Duquesne sent in a new club consisting of Lapinsky and Goggin at the for wards, Milson at center, and Unites and Caterna at the guards, and the Dukes quickly tied it up. At half time they were ahead 17 to 14. Had the Pre-Flighters made good on their foul shots the results might have been different. Shoot ing 19 times from the foul circle they were able to make but five count. Leading the winners’ scoring was John Lapinsky with nine points on four field goals and a foul shot. Fredericks had eight and Goggin and Noszk six each. Chic, with seven, was second to Hampcher for the losers. Boxing and Wrestling Pre-Flighters Over Ft. Bra^ Wrestlers Win Fifth Straight By 24-8 Score Lieut. Charlie Speidel’s unde feated wrestlers, winners of five straight, made quick work of N. C. State here Wednesday night, winning 24 to 8. Expected to be close on the basis of the 16-14 victory the Cadets had previously handed State, the visit ors were outclassed throughout. Cadet C. A. Nist, who has im proved with each match, gave the locals a five point lead when he pinned Ratts in 2 minutes of the second period. Cadet Huckabee, 128-pounder, was pinned by State’s Blalock in 35 seconds of the third period, giv ing the visitors a 5-5 tie. After that Cadets Dorn, Adams, Dill- man, Landsberg, and Abrahams, in that order, won their matches, and the Pre-Flighters had 24 points to State’s five. The final bout saw Wagoner of State deci- See WRESTLERS, page k Enlisted Men Bonebusters Win Over Communicators Taking revenge on the Com municators for a previous 39 to 25 defeat the Bonebusters (the ex- Pill Rollers) last week defeated the “signal” men, 25 to 13. Before the Dot and Dash men could score, the Tape and Tuf skin artists racked up eight points, a lead they never lost. Rocky Whitson was the big noise for the Bonebusters scoring 16 points. Score Wins :g and State Boxers Defeat Soldiers By 5-3 Count Navy’s Pre-Flight Regimental Boxing champions defeated a strong boxing team from the 65th Division, General Hospital, Ft. Bragg, here Wednesday night, 5 to 3. With 2,000 fans, mostly cadets and officers, cheering wildly, the Pre-Flighters, coached by Lt. (jg) Allie Wolff, had complete charge of matters all the way. After Cadet John Breithaupt dropped a close decision in the 130-pound class to A1 Goldberg, the local champs won the next five bouts in a row, two by TKO’s. Throwing short punches to the stomach and face with both hands, afcting Captain Cadet Raymond Jones, 145-pounder, won by TKO, end of first round, over soldier Francis Kirk. Cadet Steve Bogue, using his powerful left hand to advantage, TKO’d Roy Streiff, fighting at See BOXERS, page U Sports Program Vindicators Regain Top Spot in Sports After dropping their sports program lead last week to the Coronado squadron, the Vindica tors regained top spot again with 45 points. In second place is the Coronado squadron with 44. The sports program leaders have won six and lost two in wrestling, won five and lost four in volleyball, won one and lost none in swim ming, won four and tied four in boxing, and won 12 and lost five in basketball.
