State Officials Visit Station
^Governor Broughton Praises
Pre-Flight Training Program
U. S. Navy Pre-Flight officials staged a he-man’s show
Thursday afternoon for 140 members of the state legisla
ture, council of state, and Honorary Cadet Battalion Com
mander Governor J. Melville Broughton, all of whom came
to Chapel Hill especially to watch the Pre-Flight cadets go
through their paces.
With about 60 additional State officials and visitors, the
group also toured the new buildings that have been erected
here since the Pre-Flight school opened last May.
The legislators boarded three special buses in Raleigh
at 2:15, were welcomed in Chapel Hill at 3 by Lt. Comdr.
James P. Raugh, USNR, executive officer, and before being
guests of the Pre-Flight school for dinner, had toured the
campus taking quick glances as the Navy cadets ran the
obstacle course, and engaged in football, boxing, pushball,
basketball, wrestling, soccer, and swimming.
After dinner, demonstrations in hand-to-hand combat
and mass exercise drills were run off in Woollen
Gymnasium. At 9 o’clock the distinguished visitors re
turned to Raleigh, many surprised but all tremendously
^pleased with Pre-Flight training.
Good News and Congratulations

you needn’t either,” Lt. Comdr.
Raugh commented in his welcome
to the legislators amid sighs of
relief on both sides, but Governor
Broughton told a reporter at the
close of the program:
“I’m tremendously impressed
with the variety and thoroughness
of the Pre-Flight program. Those
who designed it did a good job
and the cadets who go through
the training are equipped for
every type of conquest.
“I’m also pleased with the fine
