Vol. 1—No. 22 U. S. Navy Pre-Flight School, Chapel Hill, N. C. Saturday, February 20, 1943 State Officials Visit Station ^Governor Broughton Praises Pre-Flight Training Program U. S. Navy Pre-Flight officials staged a he-man’s show Thursday afternoon for 140 members of the state legisla ture, council of state, and Honorary Cadet Battalion Com mander Governor J. Melville Broughton, all of whom came to Chapel Hill especially to watch the Pre-Flight cadets go through their paces. With about 60 additional State officials and visitors, the group also toured the new buildings that have been erected here since the Pre-Flight school opened last May. The legislators boarded three special buses in Raleigh at 2:15, were welcomed in Chapel Hill at 3 by Lt. Comdr. James P. Raugh, USNR, executive officer, and before being guests of the Pre-Flight school for dinner, had toured the campus taking quick glances as the Navy cadets ran the obstacle course, and engaged in football, boxing, pushball, basketball, wrestling, soccer, and swimming. After dinner, demonstrations in hand-to-hand combat and mass exercise drills were run off in Woollen Gymnasium. At 9 o’clock the distinguished visitors re turned to Raleigh, many surprised but all tremendously ^pleased with Pre-Flight training. Speaker for the occasion will be Mrs. Guy Johnson who will dis cuss new points of the war ration ing book. * * t- Taxpayers On next Thursday an office will be- set up on the second deck in Alexander Hall to aid all hands with their income tax problems. An officer will be present through out the day to answer any ques tions and all those concerned are urged to drop by and clear up their Pi'oblems. Income tax forms (1040 and 1040A) will be available. * * * Basketball Tonight Tonight at 2000 the University of North Carolina basketball quin tet plays its final home game meet ing the University of South Caro lina in Woollen gym. Cadets are invited to attend as guests of the University. South Carolina has one of the finest teams in the conference, and at present are second to Duke in the standings. The Tar Heels need a victory tonight to give them a spot in the annual Southern Con ference basketball tournament scheduled to be held in Raleigh in early March. * * taking Good Record A letter received recently by Lt. Comdr. James P. Raugh, USNR, ^ecutive officer here, stated that /^'f’light cadets taking naviga- ^on training at Coral Gables, Fla. for the most part, doing a fine job. Former Cloudbuster artist and adet—-Gene Aiello—^who is in Gaining there writes the Cloud- Uster that the program is fine, that his Pre-Flight training gave him an excellent back- §i"ound for his navigation studies. Raugh commented in his welcome to the legislators amid sighs of relief on both sides, but Governor Broughton told a reporter at the close of the program: “I’m tremendously impressed with the variety and thoroughness of the Pre-Flight program. Those who designed it did a good job and the cadets who go through the training are equipped for every type of conquest. “I’m also pleased with the fine types of young men to be found here. They are the pick of the youth of America in character and ambition. The training will not only make them the best fliers in the world, but it will make them the best citizens after the war.
