Navy Pre-Flight School track team here last Satur day afternoon, 65 to 61, but few of the 2,000 spectators in the stands were concerned over the J'esult of the meet. The crowd had come to watch Ensign Cornelius Warmerdam, USNR, the world’s greatest pole vaulter, and his jump of 15 feet 2 inches took the spot light at the meet and during the conversation afterwards. It marked the 34th time the lanky Californian had cleared the t>ar at more than 15 feet, and was ^V2 inches short of his world rec ord of 15 feet 8V2 inches made four weeks ago in Chicago, 111. Considering that Warmerdam ■Was up at 5:30 a. m. on the day of the meet and had two hours of iiiilitary drill and his regular ■vveekly examinations in the morn ing his jump was all the more im pressive. Also the ground was so ^nuddy that his track shoes picked up a great deal of mud as he pre pared for the vault. Individual high scorer was Mc Clelland of Duke with 15 points. While the Cloudbusters won two of three games played during the past week in the “Ration League,” they failed to impress the spectators with their batting prowess. The 4 to 0 victory over Duke here last Saturday was mainly the result of Gonzales’ three-hit pitch ing. He was never in danger and had complete charge of the Blue Devils throughout. What proved to be the winning tally in the Duke contest was scored in the first inning with suc cessive singles by cadets Boni- fant, Marchand and Katz, follow ed by Cadet Fleming’s long out field fly. Center fielder Marchand and Second Baseman Niemic each got three safe blows to pace the Cloudbuster attack. Marchand got the only extra base hit of the game, a triple to deep left in the seventh which scored Conlin with the third Pre-Flight run. RATION LEAGUE STANDINGS W L Pet. Timely hitting in the pinches and effective pitching on the part of Charlie Moore and Alan Car michael brought vjictory to the University nine. Both Navy tal lies came as the result of an error. N. C. State played here Wed nesday, the Cloudbusters winning 14 to 4 to avenge a previous de feat handed them by the Red Ter rors in Raleigh. The locals scored 12 runs in the first five innings to take command of the loosely-played tilt. Each team used three pitchers. Only Cadet Ivan Fessler could keep out of trouble. He hurled six and two- thirds innings and during that time blanked the visitors on three hits. He received credit for the victory. Lefty Roy Bryan, who started on the hill for State, was charged with the defeat. Bryan’s wildness aided the 'Busters in scoring their first six runs. In the first inning, after Katz was safe on Wilson’s error, Bryan issued five straight walks. A single and four more free tickets gave the Navy two of four more runs which were scored in the third. Bonifant and Katz, each with two singles, were the batting lead ers for the ’Busters.
