Boxing Features Season^s First Outdoor Smoker Featured by boxing bouts, vocal numbers, and an impromptu jitter bug exhibition—the first outdoor smoker of the year proved an en tertaining success at Emerson Stadium last Wednesday evening. Moved by the torrid tempos of the “Eight Counts of Rhythm,” Cadet Joseph Pflulger of the 24th Battalion acceded to popular de mands and provided an off-the- program jive dance with Miss Jo Beck of Chapel Hill, adding an unscheduled highlight to the en tertainment. Pugilistic encounters of the evening were led by Cadet Robert G. Tucker—fifth ranking light heavyweight of the country—who went six rounds in the squared ring, two apiece with Cadets Berg man, Murphy, and Holmes. Inter - squadron competition bouts saw Cadet Cloyd (Devasta tor) draw with Cadet Murray (Coronado) in an even battle; Cadet Bragaw (Catalina) eke out a hard won victory over Cadet White (Buffalo), and Cadet Pointer (Coronado) outpoint Cadet Martin (Skyrocket) in a slugfest. Guitar selections by Cadet Kite and vocal renditions of Cadet Owen—^formerly of Fred Waring’s orchestra—filled in as other out standing numbers, in addition to music by the “Eight Counts of Rhythm.” Lieut. FOSS (Continued from page one) Japanese pilot was he immediate ly replied that “they really know how to handle a plane.” “Don’t sell them short,” commented Cap tain Foss. “They are a worthy opponent.” Navy Department Forms New Training Command For Lighter-Than-Air New recognition to the wartime value of lighter-than-air craft was given by the Navy Department last week with the formation of a separate Training Command for airship personnel. It is the first Training Cbmmand for the air ship branch and emphasizes the importance of lighter - than - air craft in the U. S. Navy air pro gram. First Chief of Naval Airship Training .is Capt. Charles E. Rosendahl, USN, a veteran of 20 years lighter - than - air experi ence, who has been nominated by the President for promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral. All airship training is now combined under his direction as a single functional unit. Creation of the new command gives the Navy five training com mands for naval aviation, the others being Naval Air Primary Training Command, Naval Air In termediate Training Command, Naval Air Operational Training Ten Officers, Two Enlisted Men Detached Ten officers and two enlisted men were detached from this sta tion during the past week. The officers transferred and their new posts are: Lieut. Marion R. Brownlee, USNR, assistant coach, mass ex ercise, to NATC, Corpus Christi, Tex.; Lieut. Raymond J. Raab, USNR, assistant wrest ling coach, to NAS, Grosse He, Mich.; Lieut, (jg) Peter W. Ap pleton, USNR, assistant baseball coach, to NAS, Quonset Point, R. L; Lieut, (jg) John J. Stuckey, RM2c, assigned to NAS, Norman, Okla. Vindicators Lead In Sports Program The Vindicator Squadron con tinued to hold first place in Sports Program last week end with a total of 67 points. Second and third positions were held by the Wildcats and Kingfishers with 65 and 64 points, respectively. Following the Kingfishers were the Buccaneers with 53%, the Mariners with 53, Devastators 50, Helldivers 47%, Catalinas 47, Mustangs 45%, Skyrockets 41%, Buffalos 41, and Coronados 37. Individual sport records show the Vindicators have won eight and lost one in wrestling, won four, lost three and tied three in boxing, won five and lost two in track, won four and lost one in gym, won one and lost two in swimming, and won one, lost five and tied two in soccer.
