NON-SWIMMERS (Continued from page three) “This non-swimmers program is in addition to the regular aquatic training that every cadet receives. “All pre-flighters spend a great deal of their time in the water, learning to master naval swim ming tactics such as staying afloat for lengths of time, climbing cargo nets wet, disrobing in the drink, carrying rifles while swimming, etc.” “No Liberty” READING his “No Liberty” Orders, Craven Gridley, USNR, pic tured above, was detached this week, along with 115 cadets, for Primary Plight training at Peru, Indiana. A holdover from the 20th Battalion, Cadet Gridley stated through his superiors that he was looking forward to some day landing in Tokio, Craven Gridley Detached To Peru With 115 Cadets His vision is 20-20, eyes brown, hair red, brown and white. He’s eight inches tall and two feet long plus tail. His address was 202 Manly Hall. This week he was detached. Along with 115 cadets. Craven Gridley went to the Naval Air Station at Peru, Indiana. Here at Chapel Hill Gridley found the Pre-Flight program tough. For a while he didn’t think he^ would make the grade. A turnback from the 20th Battalion C-2 to the 21st Battalion F-2, he had to spend nights and week end liberty study ing. But Craven wanted to go to Tokio, and he knew his best chance was to become an Ensign with wings. So much time did Gridley spend on his books that in order to leave with the 21st Battalion he got no liberty. It wasn’t until the last minute that the military depart ment officially signed his papers. •News of his departure spread quickly over the station. Four of the cadets—K. W. Allen, Beverly Hills, California, Bob Kretzan, Richmond Hill, N. Y., T. H. Cart wright, San Diego, California, and Jimmy Talley, Atlanta, Georgia —who were going to Peru and who had helped Gridley with his math (he was unusually weak in this subject) agreed to look after him. It is rumored that Gridley call them Seabiscuit, Crip, Rebel and Bob. Craven couldn’t sign his own papers, but he watched Ensign Joseph Frank, USNR, put his John Hancock on the dotted line. By now he’s at Peru. Another three months, and he’ll start his secondary t.aiiiing. Then to Pen sacola, an Ensign with wings, and Tokio. That’s the ambition of Craven Gridley.
