Shortly after the first battalion arrived the Glee Club was formed. Cadet James Leyden, who had been in the Penn State Glee Club, organized a “locker room gang” of seventeen cadets most of whom had attended Penn State with him. From this group, a church choir evolved, and they also sang many college songs and popular airs, first for their own amusement, and later for station smokers. Arriving by this time were the second, third and fourth battalions who augmented the group and firmly established it as an integral part of the station activity. Chief Yeoman Eugene Anheir, USN (Ret.), was the first super visor of the group. After he was transferred to another station Everett Bracken, Y2c, replaced him. The latter is still in charge, and much of the success of the group can be attributed to his un selfish work. After Cadet Leyden left. Pro fessor John Toms of the Univer sity of North Carolina accepted the job of directing the group with cadets serving as assistant di rectors. At present Paul Owen, who sang with Fred Waring, is the cadet assisting Mr. Toms. The Glee Club is composed of combined Protestant and Catholic choir members. Regular Glee Club lehearsals are held on Wednesday nights while the Choir rehearses on Friday night.
