% Ens. W. O. Shanahan, USNR
Academic Department
Despite the increasing- tempo of
Warfare in the Mediterranean and
the South Pacific theaters the
principal battlefields of World
War II still lie along the Russian
front. Only local attacks have
been launched by the Germans
since the great Russian winter of
fensive of 1942-1943.
This is not to be interpreted as
^ sign of Axis weakness. More
than 200 of the 360 divisions in the
German army are standing on the
Eastern front. Two of the five
Luftflotten, the air fleets in which
the German air force is organ
ized, fly against the Soviet Union.
Indeed, the main concentration of
German bomber strength is in the
east where it has been used in
strategic missions against Rus
sian industry and communications.
The operational aircraft in
these two German air fleets num
ber about 2500, or about half of
^11 the front-line planes at Goer-
ing’s disposal. The strategic re
serve of all German aircraft, how
ever, is estimated to be 20,000
planes. Still the strength of Ger-
nian aircraft concentrations in the
east may be measured by the fact
that fewer than 300 bombers and
1000 fighters are defending Ger-
niany against British and Ameri
can bombing attacks.
In addition to the two air fleets,
the German High Command re
tains at least twenty of the thirty

The new cadet officers are:
Everett Smith, Jr., Scarsdale, N. j
Y., regimental commander; Theo
dore Lech, Woonsocket, R. I., regi

Cadet John Sain
Pitches Victory
A combined team of New York
Yankees and Cleveland Indians
could do little with the pitching
slants of Cadet John Sain Wed
nesday afternoon in Yankee Sta
dium, and the U. S. Navy Pre-
Flight Cloudbusters coasted to an
easy 11 to 5 victory before 27,281
fans.
Sain went the route for the
Cloudbusters and gave up but
eight hits while his mates were
collecting 12 off of five different
hurlers.
The game started out a pitch
ing duel between Sain and Tommy
Byrne of the Yankees. But with
the score tied at 1-1, the Cloud
busters scored three\runs in the
sixth to take a short-lived lead.
In the same inning, though, the
“Yanklands” scored four times to
take a one run lead.
At this stage the Cloudbusters
turned the game into a riot when
they tallied seven times in the
lucky seventh.
Cadet Louis Gremp, with three
singles, led the winners at the
plate while Lt. (jg) John Hassett
had a double and single in four
tries. Others to collect extra base
blows for the Pre-Flighters were
Ensign E. Moriarty and Cadet
John Pesky. They both came
through with doubles.
Serving as manager of the
“Yanklands” was Babe Ruth. As
usual, he added his artistic touch
to the exhibition. Came the sixth
inning and who should roll up to
