Saturday, August 14, 1943 CLOUDBUSTER Page Three Varsity Football Practice Starts Here On Monday Football will take the athletic spotlight starting Monday when Lieut, Frank Kimbrough, head I football coach, holds the first var- j sity practice on Emerson Field. Coach Kimbrough and his ^ides have been working for the Past month getting things in shape, and a squad of some 60 Cadets is expected to report. Since most of the cadets here How will be gone before the first game is played on Sept. 25, only those in the 30th or later bat talions will be considered eligible for the varsity squad. , During the past week cadets in I the later battalions reported to I Coach Kimbrough at their Sports Program period, and light work- I Outs were held. Monday, however, ^ill be the first time that both Coaches and cadets have been to- j gether as a unit. I Lieut. Kimbrough served as head football coach at Baylor Uni versity before being commission-' ®d in the Navy. To date six contests are on the Cloudbuster schedule, but others S'l'e expected to be added. There ^ill not, however, be any inter sectional games this fall. One of the better service clubs the nation last year, the Cloud- busters won eight, lost two and tied one. The present schedule: Sept. 25—U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Oct. 16—Camp Davis at Chap el Hill. Oct. 23—U. S. Navy Pre-Flight School, Athens, Ga., at Chapel Hill. Nov. 6—Wake Forest at Chapel Hill. Nov. 13—Camp Lejeune at Chapel Hill. Nov. 25—N. C. State at Ra- I leigh. Rangrer Topples Lexington; 3 Teams Tie for First Place Three teams were thrown into ^ tie for first place in the Pre- ^’light Softball League last Wed nesday when the Ranger handed the Lexington its first trimming of the year, 11-3, and the Essex turned back the Enterprise, 9-3. Va., 140-pound class (kneeling). ’Busters Lose Former Major Leaguers Williams, Gremp, Pesky, Coleman, Sain Complete Pre-Flight Training Sports Program Lead Still Held By Vindicators Sports Program standings con tinued to stay the same over the past week’s play as the Vindi cators held first place by a com fortable margin followed by the Wildcats, Buccaneers and King fishers in that order. Other than the four leaders, the Mariners and Mustangs showed vast improvement in play. Four points behind the fifth place Sky rockets a week ago, the Mariners moved into a tie for this spot with a 57 point total. The Mustangs, in the cellar for most of the sea son’s play, moved up two notches in the standings while the Buffalos and Coronados took a nose dive. See SPORTS PROGRAM, page U What was one of the finest service teams in baseball played its final game here Monday afternoon defeating the Durham Bulls of the Piedmont League, 10 to 3. Three or four more contests are scheduled for the remainder of the year, but the Cloudbusters will be minus the services of Ensign Harry Craft and Cadet Theodore Williams, outfielders; Cadets Louis Gremp ^and John Pesky, infielders, and Cadets Joseph Coleman and John Sain, pitchers. All but Ensign Craft, who was transferred to the Del Monte Pre- Flight School, have completed their Pre-Flight training and will report during the next few days to their Primary Flight Bases. Neither Craft, Sain nor Wil liams participated in the Durham Bulls contests.
