Saturday, August 21, 1943 CLOUDBUSTER Page Three All-Stars Defeated; Erwin Auditorium Plays Here Today The battery combination of Lt. Alexander Sabo and Lt. (jg) Rob ert Williams paved the way for the Cloudbusters to register a 6 to 0 victory over the Burlington All-Stars here last Sunday after noon. Williams, on the mound, held the All-Stars to five singles, no two of which came in the same inning while Sabo hit two home runs to account for half the Pre- Flight tallies. Ensign Wendell Wear, playing shortstop, led the Pre-Flight hit ting and figured in most of the scoring. In the opening frame he singled, stole second, and scored when Lt. (jg) John Hassett was safe at first on an error. Again in the sixth with the score still 1 to 0, Wear doubled into left field and scored on Ensign Ray Stoviak’s single to right. Followed Sabo’s first home run. A base on balls, stolen base, and infield out provided another Pre- Flight score in the seventh, and Sabo’s second home run in the seventh produced the final run of the contest. No other games were played over the past week, but this after noon Erwin Auditorium comes here for a game starting at 1600 on Emerson Field. V-5’er Ray Scarborough, who pitched with the Washington Nationals before com ing into the Navy, will start on the mound for the locals. Seven Officers, Six Enlisted Men Attached Here During Past Week Seven officers and six enlisted men were attached to this station during the past week. The new officers and their as signments are: Lt. (jg) William J. Treichler, USNR, and Lt. (jg) Howard P. Keebler, USNR, gym and tumbling; Lt. (jg) Glenn E. Presnell, USNR, assistant foot ball coach; Lt. (jg) C. J. Julian, USNR, Ens. Matthew J. Themes, USNR, and Ens. Howard E. Thompson, USNR, platoon of ficers; Ens. Thomas H. Duffy, USNR, academic department. The enlisted men attached, all arriving from NAS Anacostia, D* C., are; Thomas L. Johnson, Ylc, Earle C. Parrish, Jr., Ylc, John B. Walsh, SK2c, Allen E. Holton, SKlc, John P. Dunnigan, SK3c, and Malcolm F. Johnson, Y2c. Getting Ready For a Dip in the New Outdoor Pool Ens. Welsh Wins Singles Tennis Title With Ease The singles division of the Pre- Flight War Bond Tennis Toura- ment proved a walk-away for Ens. B. T. Welsh, USNR, of the Academic Department, who trounced each of his four oppon ents played by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Finalist with Ens. Welsh from a field of 21 entries was Lt. (jg) Charles E. Galbreath, USNR, also of the Academic Department,- Ens. Welsh teamed with Lt, Comdr. Lloyd R, Sauer, USNR, to win the doubles title. Cadets Can Now Play Table Tennis Outdoors Four outdoor ping pong tables, two located in each quadrangle, were placed in operation for the cadets during the past week. The paddles and balls arg issued each weekday from Everett and Grimes dormitories at 1700, except on Wednesdays when the equipment will be available for use at 1500. The outdoor equipment will be available for use at 1500 on Satur days and 1300 on Sundays. Hold over cadets may use the tables during any of their free time. SEVERAL HUNDRED swimmers have been making daily use of the new outdoor swimming pool located directly in back of Woollen Gymnasium, Just recently opened, Navy personnel and their families have an opportunity to use it each week day afternoon and most of Saturday and Sunday. Navy Personnel and Families May Use Outdoor Swimming Pool At long last the new Navy outdoor swimming pool, located directly back of Woollen Gymnasium, is ready for use. Opened last week several hundred persons made use of the popl, and as someone remarked, “it couldn’t have been opened at a better time. This August heat is terrible.” The present schedule for recreational use of the pool, as released ■<S>by the athletic office, makes it pos sible for Navy personnel and their families to use it each afternoon and most of Saturday and Sunday. Exact hours are as follows: recreation periods, from 1630 to 2030 Monday through Friday; from 1115 to 1300 and from 1500 to 1800 Saturday, and from 1400 to 1700 on Sunday. Instruction periods are scheduled from 800 to 1545 every week day. Since the opening of the out door pool recreation periods in the Bowman Gray indoor pool have been discontinued. However, in rainy weather the pool will be used for recreational periods from 1730 to 1930 Monday through Fri day, and from 1530 to 1800 on Sat urday, and from 1400 to 1700 on Sunday. A special swimming period for children is still sched uled each day from 1115 to 1200 in the Bowman Gray pool. The size of the new outdoor pool is slightly smaller than the indoor See OUTDOOR POOL, page U Invest In The Future You’re Fighting For Liberty Award Won By Vindicators Last week’s liberty award went to the Vindicators, the squadron leading the Sports Program with a total of 82 points. Still undefeated in wrestling and possessing a record of 19 wins against a single loss in volleyball and tag football the Vindicators continue to set a pace which gives them a 12 point advantage over their nearest rivals, the King fishers, The Buccaneers are in third place with 68 points, the Wild cats have 66, Helldivers 63, Marin ers 62, Skyrockets 60, Catalinas 58, Devastators 57, Buffalos 46^, Coronados 44, and the Mustangs are in last place with 43%. In track the Helldivers lead with nine wins against one tie; the Devastators are best in boxing with five victories and three ties.
