Next in line were the Wildcats and Mariners with 85. From July 24 until last Satur day the Vindicators had held the top position in the standings. Also their record for the season was the best made by any squadron in the Sports Program since this school was commissioned on May 23, 1942. Final standings in the Summer program give the Buccaneers and Skyrockets 79 points, the Hell- divers and Catalinas 76, Devasta tors 73%, Buffalos 66, Coronados 59%, and the Mustangs 59%. The Fall Sports Program got underway this week, but only one contest had been played by each squadron as of Wednesday. The Buffalos, Vindicators, King fishers, Devastators, Helldivers and Mustangs each scored single victories in soccer while the Coro nados, Mariners, Buccaneers, Sky rockets, Catalinas, and Wildcats were on the losing end. Invest In The Future You’re Fighting For Former Cloudbuster Pitcher Writes Lt. Kepler From Peru (Editor’s Note: Cadet Jimmie Doole, a member of the Cloud buster baseball team during the past summer, wrote the following letter to Lieut. George D. Kepler, USNR, head baseball coach, upon arriving at Peru, Indiana.) “Dear Mr. Kepler, “This is a second-hand attempt by me to say what I really want ed to before I left Chapel Hill. “In some way I’d like to thank you for all the breaks you gave me during my short stay at the ‘Hill.’ When I left college I had just about given up the thought of playing baseball for quite some time, and certainly I had no in tentions of playing ball with boys like Ted, Johnny, Mr. Hassett, etc. But when you called out the candidates from the ‘27th,’ I thought I might as well give it a try. All I know is that in those few weeks I had more fun and picked up more tips than I ever could have in a whole season any where else. Actually pitching for such a club was far beyond my dreams, but you did give me a chance for which I am extremely grateful even if I did batch up the works a bit. “That trip to New York was really the climax of the whole season for me. Just throwing bat ting practice in Yankee Stadium is enough to give any kid a thrill. It was the same way all through the season, I really got a kick out of throwing ’em up. When guys like Mr. Hassett, Mr. Craft, Johnny, Ted and the others treat you like any other ball player and try to help you—well it just gives you a fine impression of big league ball players. “I’ve done a lot of talking—^per haps too much, practically review ing the whole season. But it only shows what an impression Chapel Hill made on me. “It wasn’t all baseball. I enjoy ed every day of my training. I know you hear lots of griping about the beating we get, but every cadet who goes through Chapel Hill learns plenty that will help him the rest of his life. The one real reason for this I think lies in the terrific staflf of oflficers, ath letics, platoons, etc. It’s hard for an outsider to realize the fine training each cadet receives, but when you think that every great athlete is there to help you—well you dig in and get an even bigger kick out of it. “Peru looks as if it will be a great place. Tomorrow I have my first flight and I can truly say I’m rarin’ to go! Flying takes up most of our time, and we get about 100 Hospital Corps, Satellites Score Upsets in Softball Two upsets marked play in the softball league on Wednesday af ternoon when the Hospital Corps defeated the Lexington, 7 to 2, and the Satellites handed the Essex a 5 to 0 loss. In other games played the En terprise won out over the Sara toga, 7 to 6, and the Cowpens lost to the Rangers, 13 to 6. Had either the Essex or the Lex ington won on Wednesday they would have held undisputed pos session of first place in the league standings. As it now stands they are tied with the Rangers with a record of 5 wins and two losses apiece. A playoff between the three teams to decide the champion will be held during the next week. Also, a complete list of the final standings will be printed in the next issue of the Cloudbuster. hours here. “I could go on, but I have prob ably said too much already. Again all I can say is thanks a lot for the best three months of my Naval training. Please say hello and give my best to everyone, Mr. Has sett, Mr. Krywicki, Mr. Deutsch, and all the swell bunch. “Sincerely, Jimmy Doole.”
