Boxers Risk Undefeated Record

Not as strong as last yeai’, but
^ea<iy, willing and able, the Pre-
^Hght boxing team will risk its
'^iidefeated record against the
University of Vii’ginia tonight at
Charlottesville.
Last year the boxers won four
batches in as many starts, and
^night’s affair against Virginia
"^ill be their first outside competi
tion in 1944.
For the past two weeks Lieut.
Alfred Wolff, USNR, head boxing
^oach, has been sending the Cloud-
^Uster mittmen through their
Paces. Against Virginia they will,
however, be the decided underdog.

—Coming Up—
Tonight at Charlottesville, Va.,
the varsity boxers open their 1944
season against the University of
Virginia, while in Raleigh the Pre-
Flight basketball team goes
against North Carolina State.
Lieut. Charles Speidel’s, USNR,
wrestlers are idle this week, but
will return to action next Friday
when Cherry Point comes to
Chapel Hill.
Other than the contest in Raleigh
tonight, the basketball quintet
faces three tough opponents dur
ing the next eight days. On Wed
nesday Camp Davis, with a host of
ex-college stars, comes to Chapel
Hill, and on Saturday and Sunday
the Cloudbusters will perform in
Norfolk, meeting the Naval Air
Station on Saturday and the Naval
Training Station on Sunday.
The boxers will return to action
on Friday, February 4, with the
Fourth Field Artillery from Ft,
Bragg furnishing the opposition.
Cadets Invited
Cadets are invited to attend the
basketball game between Cax’olina
and VPI and the boxing match be
tween Carolina and Maryland to
night in Woollen Gymnasium.
First on schedule is the basketball
game which gets underway at 1900.

Wrestlers Defeat
Duke by 15 to II
A strong finish, which saw the
Pre-Flight wrestlers win their
last five bouts in a row, was re
sponsible for the Cloudbusters
scoring a 15 to 11 victory over
Duke here last Thursday.
Cadet J. L. Ross, 175-pounder,
put the Pre-Flighters in the lead
for the first time by gaining a
decision over Woodall, and Cadet
H. J. Horan decisioned Duke’s Bill
Milner to clinch the meet. The lat
ter bout was delayed 40 minutes
when blackout was sounded.
Only Duke’s F. W. Stender, 121-
pounder, was able to register a fall
as all other bouts were decided by
decision, two of them in overtimes.
Other than the regular varsity,
Duke brought 15 extra men to com
pete against the Cloudbusters. The
future fliers won all of these
bouts, while Duke got four.

Naval Academy
Defeated, 45-38
Fine defensive play, which
limited the Naval Academy to but
six field goals in the first half,
paved the way for the Cloudbust
ers to register a 45 to 88 victory
at Annapolis last Saturday after
noon.
It was Bud Palmer who did most
of the Cloudbuster scoring, but the
entire first team of Myers, Skaug,
Dye, Elser, and Palmer all played
important roles in the victory.
A tight zone defense kept the
Middies from scoring a field goal
during the first eight minutes of
play, and at halftime the Pre-
Flighters were ahead, 33 to 16.
Bud Palmer had accounted for 20
of those 33 points, and he added 5
more in the second half to give
him 25 for the afternoon.
Other than Palmer, Skaug had
9 points and Myers 8.
