Naval Academy Wins Indoor Track Meet
AMONG THE OUTSTANDING performers who displayed their talents
at the Southern Indoor Games held in Woollen gymnasium last Sat
urday were Charles Beetham, of the Pre-Flight squad (upper left),
Robert Pitkin, Pre-Flight (upper right), Frank Lupo, Px’e-Flight
(lower left) and Hamberg, of Naval Academy gridiron fame (lower
right). Beetham won firsts in the 440- and 880-yard runs, Pitkin was
tops in the high jump, Lupo ran as anchor man on the victorious Pre-
Flight mile relay team, and Hamberg placed second in the broad jump.

Behind Winners
As expected, the U. S. Naval
Academy^s crack track team won
first place in the Southern Indoor
Games held last Saturday in
Woollen Gymnasium before a
capacity house. However, the Pre-
Flight Cloudbusters were but six
points behind the total of 45 regis
tered by the winners.
Navy captured first place in the
two-mile run, shot put and the
broad jump, and placed second in
the broad jump, high jump, one-
mile run, 60-yard dash, 880-yard
run, and the one-mile relay. They
tied the Cherry Point Marines for
second in the pole vault.
The Cloudbusters took first
place honors in the high jump,
one-mile relay, the 440- and 880-
yard runs and the 70-yard high
hurdles.
Charles Beetham, former na
tional collegiate and AAU record
holder who wore Pre-Flight
colors, was the outstanding per
former in the meet. The Cloud-
buster ace broke meet records in
the 440- and 880-yard runs. His
time of 51.6 seconds topped the
old record of 52.2 with time to
spare in the 440, and he was out
in front by 30 yards in setting a
new record of 1:59.6 in the 880.
The old record was 2:01.6, set by
Green, of Virginia, in 1943.
Carolina’s Tar Heels scored 26.5
points to win third place. They
Were the defending champions. In
fourth place were the Cherry Point
Marines, with 10 tallies, Virginia,
fifth with nine, Carolina ASTP,
sixth with six, Georgia Tech,
seventh with five, and the Balti
more Polytechnic squad brought
Up the rear with 1V2 points.
Five meet records were broken
and one tied during the meet.

The Navy wives will hold their
regular monthly meeting next
Wednesday at 1500 in Lenoir Hall.
Mrs. Nicholson Adams of the Uni
versity of North Carolina library
staff will present a book review.
All Pre-Flight officers’ wives are
invited to attend.
Cadet Palmer Sets
New Cloudbuster
Scoring Record
Cadet Bud Palmer set a new
Cloudbuster scoring mark for the
season just ended with 352 points.
Whitey Myers was next in line
with 322, Tippy Dye had 104, Stan
Skaug 99, Don Elser 69, and Ken
Laird 41.
Palmer’s total is the highest
made in basketball during the past
two seasons. Also his 32 point
total against Davidson is the high
est individual mark registered by
a Cloudbuster player.
Over the season just completed
the Cloudbusters won 17 of 20
games to rank with the best ser
vice teams in the nation. Among
those teams defeated were the
Naval Air Station from Norfolk,
Duke twice and the U. S. Naval
Academy. Losses were to the
Cherry Point Marines, Naval Air
Station and Naval Training Sta
tion, both located at Norfolk.
