Saturday, May 27, 1944 CLOUDBUSTER Page Three USS Card Competes Against Cloudbusters MEMBERS OF THE USS CARD returned to this Pre-Flight School last week end, and participated in three athletic contests against the Cloudbusters. On the left, above, is shown the Card football team, while on the right, Cadet Harman is shown as he got loose for a short gain against the visitors midway the third period. The Fre-Flighters won the game, 27 to 0. Thirty-three members of the USS Card, headed by Lieut. J. T. “Whitey” Kimbriel, USNR, who was at one time attached to this sta tion as Battalion Officer, spent last week end in Chapel Hill and com peted against three Pre-Flight athletic teams. On Friday afternoon the regular Cloudbuster baseball team de feated the visitors, 16 to 8, and on Friday night in basketball the Pre- Flighters won, 45 to 26. Saturday^^s^ afternoon saw the local Navy lads 1‘egister a 27 to 0 victory in foot ball, but not before the visitors had caused plenty of trouble. Back to the baseball game: The Cloudbusters had things much their own way as they scored 16 runs on 14 hits. A double by Gau- lin, singles by Falk, Smith and Pearson, and a base on balls to Barnes provided three Pre-Flight runs in the first. Another trio of runs were scored in the second when Cadet Cort Falk connected for a home run with two men on base. It was not until the visitors had spotted the Pre-Flighters 13 runs that they were able to score them selves, But once they got started, they sent six runs home in the fourth and looked as if they might cause the winners some trouble be fore the afternoon was over. Seipman, Tocci, and Beachman, each with two singles, paced the losers at the plate. For the Cloud busters Falk had a single and home run, and centerfielder Smith bad three singles and a double. In the basketball game played on Friday night, the visitors were ahead, 16 to 12, at the end of the first quarter, and at halftime the Score was tied up at 16 all. How ever, the Pre-Flighters moved in to the lead, 25 to 21, at the end of the third period, and increased their margin even more as the game continued. Cadet Dick Hartley, former Uni- ■'^ersity of North Carolina ace, con tributed most to the Pre-Flight cause by scoring 19 points on eight field goals and three foul shots. Bremans had six, and Mac- Farland, Paine, Herman, Barger and Gribben four each. Kaneack, with seven points, was high man for the losers, while Toon had six. Scott and Gean- motta had four each, Carney and MacLaughton two, and Tocci one. Saturday’s football game was especially close until the Pre- Flighters scored two touchdowns in the third period. During the first half Hammer broke loose for 30 yards and a touchdown on a beautiful reverse, but that was all the scoring as both teams played good defensive ball. Midway the third period Cadet Jones got loose on a beautiful 60 yard run which produced another score, and in the same period Cadet O’Dell caught a flat pass and ran 25 yards for a touchdown only to have the play called back due to a penalty on Pre-Flight. O’Dell, Jones, Hammer and Hartley stood out for Pre-Flight in the backfield, while Fernald, Rumery and Astaat were best in the line. Several of the visitors partici pated in all three of the contests which were played within a 24 hour period. BTC, Camp Butner Are Defeated By Cloudbusters Two of the better baseball ser vice teams in North Carolina— Camp Butner and BTC 10, Greens boro—were defeated by the Cloud busters over the past weekend. The victory over Camp Butner by a 4 to 1 score on Saturday made it two out of three for the season for the Cloudbusters. What proved to be the winning runs were scored without the aid of a hit when Pre- Flight tallied in the first on three walks and a fielder’s choice and again in the third on two errors and a long fly to left by Dusty Cooke. Camp Butner combined singles by Arthur and Denton and a fielder’s choice to score their lone run in the sixth, but Pre- Flight came back with a run in the seventh on a single by Thompson and a two-bagger by Gaulin. Another score was added in the eighth when Falk who had singled came home on Dusty Cooke’s two base Texas Leaguer into center. Sunday’s game with BTC 10 was a 12 to 8 Cloudbuster verdict. The future Navy fliers scored a single run in the first, two in the second, one in the third, and they were never behind. Three Cloudbuster hurlers paraded to the mound during the contest which lasted three hours. Burkewitz started out, but gave way to Merrell in the third. The latter turned things over to Somer ville with none away in the sixth. Singles by Gaulin, Barnes and Falk produced a single run in the See BTC, page 4 BASEBALL (Continued from page one) his line drive single to left field scored Mills with the first and most important run of the game. A gift from Shortstop Dallas Branch gave the Pre-Flighters their two sixth inning tallies. Crampsey led off with a single, and Thompson and Smith, who follow ed, were easy outs. Pearson kept the rally alive, however, with a one base blow, but Mills hit a grounder to Branch for what should have been the third out. However, the little shortstop threw wide at first, and before the ball could be retrieved both Crampsey and Pearson had crossed home plate.
