Cherry Point
Scores 5 To 2
Win In Baseball
Combining timely hitting with
effective pitching by Scott, the
Cherry Point Marines handed the
Cloudbusters their fifth defeat in
21 starts this season by a score of
5 to 2 here last Sunday afternoon.
It was anybody’s game until the
ninth when Pitcher Scott, who held
the Cloudbusters to six scattered
hits, poled a homer into deep left
center scoring Brown ahead of
him.
The Marines scored first on a
home run by left fielder Malkasian
in the second, but the Cloudbusters
came back to tie it up in the third
when Gaulin walked, stole second,
and tallied on a safety by Larkin.
Again in the sixth the Marines
went ahead when Hubbard walked,
advanced on a single by Doolittle
and scored on a hit by Wright.
Brown scored what proved to be
the winning marker when he open
ed the seventh with a Texas league
double to left, and went the rest of

50th Battalion
Is Second, 49th
Finishes Third
With Billy Conn, the leading
heavyweight contender to Joe
Louis, on hand to referee part of
the boxing bouts, the second Regi
mental Sports Championship was
held here on Fetzer Field Wednes
day evening.
Conn, who at present is sta
tioned at BTC 10, Greensboro, ar
rived in time to witness part of
the Duke-Pre-Flight baseball game
played in the afternoon. During
the game he was in the Cloud
buster dugout with Lieut. Comdr.
Ed. Don George, USNR; Lieut.
Allie Wolff, USNR, and Cadet
Bill Smith, his brother-in-law.
Smith is on the Cloudbuster base
ball team.
Thanks to an assist by the 49th,
the 48th Battalion won the Regi
mental Championship with a total
of 223 points.
Going into the sports competi
tion the 48th was in first place
with 175 points by virtue of win
ning top honors in academics and
class athletics and coming out
third in military. Next in line was
the 50th with 110 points. How
ever, the latter held the advantage
in that they had four teams in the
sports finals while the 48th had
but one.
But the best the 50th could do
was win one of those four events,
and the 48th came through with an
easy 52 to 18 victory in wrestling
which was their only competition.
Here’s how the 49th gets an as
sist. In boxing they defeated the
50th, 9 to 8, the final bout decid
ing the outcome. And the same was
true in swimming as they came
through with a 47 to 37 victory
over the 50th in that event.
Other results gave the 49th a
2 to 1 victory over the 51st in soc
cer, and the 50th Battalion won out
in track over the 49th, 60 to 27.
Following close behind the lead
ers was the 50th Battalion with
208 points, the 49th with 163, the
51st with 138, and the 52nd came
in fifth with 73.
Six new records—three in swim
ming and three in track—^were
broken during the competition.
Cadet Eusden of the 49th set a
new time of 26.1 in the 50 Meter
Dress Stroke to beat the old mark
of 29.2 set by Cadet Harris of the
45th. In the 25 Meter Carry,
