Lieut. Comdr. Burton Ingwersen, USNR, Director of Athletics, served as master of ceremonies. He congratulated the cadets for their very fine spirit on the field, and stated that, “he got a much greater thrill out of watching the 1944 team perform than he did the team last year with Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky and the other major league stars.” Lieut. Comdr. James P. Raugh, USNR, Commanding Officer; Lieut. Comdr. Howard Hamilton, USNR, Executive Officer, and Lieut. Comdr. Glenn Killinger, USNR, head coach of baseball, all made short talks in which they praised the cadets for the fine spirit which won for them the Ration League pennant. “The 1 to 0 victory over Duke has served as an inspiration to every man attached to this station,” Lieut. Comdr. Raugh told the cadets. “Each of you are to be congratulated for bringing the cham pionship to this Pre-Flight School.” Certificates from the Cloudbuster Athletic Association were pre sented to each member of the team by Lieut. Comdr. Raugh. Also, the Pre-Flight Skipper told the cadets that a gold baseball had been ordered for each of them. Lieut. Comdr. Hamilton also mentioned the Duke game. He re minded the cadets that on the baseball field they were learning the fundamental principles that would make them the best pilots in the world. “I’ve coached a lot of baseball teams,” Lieut Comdr. Killinger told his boys, “but I’ve never coached a team with more spirit and determination. We didn’t have a great ball club. Our hitting was weak. But we played hard and we played to win. You boys are responsible for victory. Congratulations!” 1?. 49 14 .286 , 7 28 14 .286 4 7 2 .286 3 7 2 .286 11 43 12 .279 11 47 13 -.277 11 40 11. .275 .. 9 30 8 .267 11 35 9 .257 1?1 51 13 .255 10 32 8 .250 9 20 5 .250 .... 4 4 1 .250 Kollonige, Pre-P. The Cherry Point contest was a 12 inning affair, the game being tied up 4 to 4 at the end of the ninth. In the 12th the Cloudbust- ers pushed across a run to move ahead, 5 to 4, but the Marines scored two in the same frame to win the game. Somerville started on the mound for the Navy, but both O’Neill and Siegneur saw action before the contest was finished. In Greensboro, on Wednesday night of this week, the Pre-Flight- ers suffered the 14 to 4 defeat. However, the score does not indi cate the closeness of the contest which, incidentally, was witnessed by 4,000 persons. The wildness of four Pre-Flight hurlers and a couple of tough breaks were responsible for the Cloudbuster downfall. Until the Tech-Hawks scored seven runs in the last of the fifth, the Cioud- busters were ahead, 4 to 1. A near-riot enlivened the ball game in the top half of the fifth when Jim Crampsey belted a tre-^ mendous drive over Taft Wright’s head in deep left field. It scored Dusty Cooke from first base, and Crampsey himself dashed for the plate. The relay got away from See BASEBALL, page 4
