IP' LOU USTE o Vol. 2—No. 48 U. S. Navy Pre-Flight School, Chapel Hill, N. C. Saturday, August 12, 1944 Lieut. John Gaddy Reports Pre-Flight Cadets Rate High To those of you who wonder about amphibious duty, Lieut. John R. Gaddy, USNR, brings a word of cheer. The chow’s fine, anyway. Lieut. Gaddy, now a platoon of ficer attached to this station, has just returned from a year and week with a CASU unit in the South Pacific. His knowledge of amphibious duty is confined mainly to his trip back to the States. Most of the year and a week was spent on Munda Island, where he landed the day after the Ma rines had taken over the Jap air strip on that New Georgian island. There were dead Japs everywhere, but live Japs also returned every night for three months, bombing the installations that the Navy, Seabees and Marines, were con structing. A number of pilots who had gone through Pre-Flight training at St. Mary’s, where Lieut. Gaddy was formerly connected with the sports program, were also out in Munda. Lieut. Gaddy went out with several of them on a bomb ing raid over Bougainville. They didn’t encounter any trouble on that occasion, but several days later one of the same pilots came back with 176 holes in his plane. The test pilot at- Munda was “Red’' Greene who finished Pre- Flight at Chapel Hill with the 12th battalion. Lieut. Gaddy said that both “Red” and the other Navy pilots were a great bunch of boys who got a kick out of the “simple” See LIEUT. GADDY, page U Snake-Eaters at Carolina The eagerly awaited showing of the Paramount News pictures taken here of Pre-Flight cadets consuming snakes as part of the Survival program will be pre sented at the Carolina Theatre next Friday and Saturday. All The Way From Scotland FOLLOWING in his father’s footsteps. Cadet William Matthews, pictured above, returned to the United States from Scotland to enlist in the Navy and the V-5 training program. He likes the Navy fine, but from the above smile you can gather he’d like to go back to Scotland for a short visit. <?>■ Cadet Matthews Hopes to Make Navy His Career After years of hearing “Scotch” jokes, both good and bad, it was surprising to hear and see the manner in which Scotsman Wil liam Matthews, now a V-5 cadet, described his first impression of the United States. Cadet Matthews isn’t a true Scot for he was born in Baton Rouge, La. But his family moved to Scotland shortly after his birth and Bill, as he is better known, re turned to this country for the first time when he enlisted in the V-5 program. After serving as a communica tions man on a RAF coastal plane See MATTHEWS, page U Extend Sympathy The Officers, Crew and Regi ment of Cadets join with fam ily, relatives and friends in mourning the death of Major R. O. Hawkins, from the Ma rine Base at Cherry Point, on Thursday morning. A brother-in-law of Cadet W. J. Savage of the 57th Bat talion, Major Hawkins was critically injured on Sunday afternoon when his Hellcat fighter plane crashed in a corn field about half a mile north of the Chapel Hill Airport. Cause of his death in the Naval Dispensary here was at tributed to extreme multiple injuries.
