Lt. Comdr. Gilday, who headed the Nomenclature and Recognition
course here prior to taking charge of the Military Department last
March, had served at this station since May, 1942. His new admin
istrative assignment is in welfare and recreation work. Bureau of

47 Officers
Receive Survival
Instruction Here
A group of 47 Naval and Coast
Guard officers, including six from
this station, comprise the second
class now receiving special instruc
tion in the survival program here.
A group of 39 officers completed
the first course here on July 29.
Lieut. Stuart Brewbaker,
USNR, of the Navy Pre-Flight
School, Athens, Ga., is Officer-in-
Charge of the two weeks’ course,
assisted by three local officers,
Lieut. G. D. Kepler, Lt. (jg) John
Craighead, and Lt. (jg) Frank C.
Craighead.
Those from this station included
in the class are Lieut. R. H. Paugh,
Lt. (jg) Howard P. Keebler, Lt.
(jg) Leonard Blackburn, Lt. (jg)
Sven Rosengren, Ens. Fielding
Simmons, and Ens. James W.
Glassford.
Band To Give 5th
Concert Tomorrow
The fifth concert of the season,
which was cancelled last Sunday
because of special memorial ser
vices for Dr. Frederick Koch, of
the University of North Carolina,
will be given by the Navy Pre-
Flight School band tomorrow at
1630 in the Forest Theatre.
The program will be the same
as printed in last week’s Cloud-
BUSTER.
Crew Picnic
Next Saturday
A picnic for all enlisted men
and WAVES will be held next
Saturday afternoon starting at
1700 at the Chapel Hill Coun
try Club.
The evening meal will be
served at approximately 1830,
and music will be provided by
the Pre-Flight School band.
Outdoor Dance
To Be Held Tonight
For Entire Station
An all-station dance for the
cadet regiment, officers, and en
listed personnel will be held on the
outdoor basketball courts in back
of Navy Hall tonight from 2100 to
2400.
Music will be furnished by the
Pre-Flight School band, with
Drummer William K. Chapman
featured on the vocals. Refresh
ments will be served throughout
the evening.
Liberty for the cadets will be ex
tended to 0030, with taps coming
at 0045.
In event of rain, the dance will
be shifted to Woollen gym.
Navy Bond Purchases
Reach New Peak in July
Breaking all previous records,
War Bond purchases by Navy per
sonnel during July totalled $78,-
587,569. This, figure topped by a
considerable margin the former
high mark of $57,021,654, set last
December, and brought the grand
total since the inauguration of the
Navy bond program in October,
1941, to $703,002,352.
The July total was an increase
of 186.7% over the $27,783,065 for
the corresponding month in 1943.
Of the July sales, $49,038,810
were cash purchases, $17,513,496
were sales to civilian personnel un
der the payroll savings plan, and
$12,035,263 were allotment pur
chases by uniformed personnel.
Need For Veteran
Linemen Worries
Cloudbuster Coaches
The status quo of the Cloud
buster football team didn’t change
during the past week as the 50-odd
candidates donned heavy equip
ment for the first time.
It was the same old story just
as Head Mentor Glenn Killinger
stated a week ago: The backfield
looks great. Some close observers
are predicting it to be the finest
to wear Cloudbuster colors. But
the line continues to be a problem,
and you don’t win football games
unless you have the men up front
to lead the way.
Thursday saw the arrival of the
59th Battalion, but as yet its po
tentialities are unknown. Coach
Killinger is looking especially for
some guards and tackles, some
boys who will be able to hold their
own against such teams as the
Naval Academy, Duke, and the
Bainbridge Training Station.
The end spots, at this writing,
are in good hands. Warren An
derson, the captain-elect at Col
gate this year, and Richard Shee
han, who played freshman ball at
the University of Missouri, are
still the top candidates. And at
center there is Gene Flick who was
all-conference at that position at
the University of Minnesota. But
the guards and tackles are unset
tled, and any of the 12 or 14 men
