Cloudbusters Meet Cherry Point Sunday

In Fine Shape
For First Game
1944 football for the U. S. Navy
Pre-Flight Cloudbusters will of
ficially get underway tomorrow
afternoon against the Cherry
Point Marines in Kenan Stadium.
Kick-off time is slated for 1430
(2:30).
For some six weeks now, the
Pre-Flighters have been working
out under the watchful eyes of
Lieut. Comdr. Glenn Killinger,
USNR, head gridiron mentor, and
aides, and the team will face its
first big test in fine shape.
The backfield is paced by Otto
Graham, the All-American from
Northwestern, and Spec Sanders,
who played on Dana Bible’s
famous University of Texas team
in 1941. The line has such stand
outs as Warren Anderson and Mel
bourne Sheehan, ends; Gene Flick
and Kermit Atkinson, guards, and
Joe Partington, center.
Atkinson, who is a former Fur
man University star, will be the
Cloudbusters’ captain tomorrow.
Anderson is a former Colgate Uni
versity ace, Sheehan played at the
University of Missouri, Flick at
the University of Minnesota, and
Partington hails from the Univer
sity of Nebraska.
The Cloudbuster starting line
will average 192 pounds, while
the backfield weighs 182.
Coach Killinger is using the
“T” Formation with the quarter
back up over the center. It’s an
exciting game to watch from the
spectator point of view.
Notes on the coaching staff:
Lieut. Comdr. Killinger is a grad
uate of Penn State, class of 1921.

season was held in Emerson Sta
dium immediately after the even

Making their debut as Cloud
buster leaders of cheer for the ’44
season were WAVES Dora Ar
cher, PhM3c, Marilyn Scholl,
HAlc, and Irene Contois, HA2c,
along with Cadets Rudolph Bruni,
of the 59th Battalion, and Joseph
Lesniewski, of the 56th.

Cadets Admitted
Free to UNC Game
Pre-Flight School cadets will be
admitted free, as guests of the
University, to the Carolina-Wake
Forest game scheduled for Kenan
Stadium this afternoon at 1500.
The cadets will be admitted at
Gate 5, located on the South side
near the West end. The only
means of identification required
will be the regular uniform of the
day.
Cadets accompanied by guests
should purchase tickets for the
guests at Gate 6. After they enter
the stadium they may sit with
their guests.

Marines Slated
To Arrive Today
For Workout

Sergeant Jim McMurdo, the
Cherry Point Marines are expect
ed to arrive in Chapel Hill today
for tomorrow’s game with the
Cloudbusters.
Latest reports from Cherry
Point indicate that the visitors are
in top physical condition, and that
their starting eleven will average
192 pounds from end to end and
179 pounds in the backfield.
Pacing the line play will be Ser
geant Lafayette King, 195-pound
wingman from Macon, Ga., and
Corporal Sam Brazinski, 200-
pound pivot man and former cen
ter for Smith during the latter’s
final year as head coach at Villa-
nova.
King, a holdover from last sea
son’s club, learned his football at
the University of Georgia, and as
a freshman understudied George
Poschner, the Bulldog’s All-Amer
ican flankman i-n 1942. Brazinski,
whose name was shortened to Bray
by Eastern sportswriters, played
three years of varsity ball at Villa-
nova and his defensive experience.
