Senior Medical Officer Promoted

CAPT. DEANE H. VANCE, (MC)USN (Ret.), Senior Medical Officier
of the Pre-Flight School here, who was recently promoted to his
new rank, is a veteran of 27 years in. the Naval service. Commisr
sioned in the Navy in 1917, he has served several years as ^ flight
surgeon, and is qualified as a pilot. He has had more than seven
years of sea duty. Within a fe^v weeks after his retirement in June,
1941, he was recalled to active duty. ^

Two of the top service teams
in the nation will risk their unde
feated records in Kenan Stadium
tomorrow afternoon at 1430
when, the Bainbridge Commodores
square off with the U. S. Navy
Pre-Flight Cloudbusters. A crowd
of 15,000 is expected.
The visitors, who have never
lost a game in two years of com
petition, have such proven ball
carriers as Harvey Johnson (Wil
liam and Mary), Don Durdan
(Oregon State), Jim Gatewood
(Georgia), Jackie Field (Texas),
Harry “Hippity” Hopp (Nebras
ka), Joe Kane (Pennsylvania),
Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice of
Asheville High School fame, and a
flock of others.
In the line are such standouts
ends Joe Davis of the Univer
sity of Southern California and
Alfred Vandeweghe of William
and Mai-y; tackles Elwood Ger-
berg, captain of the team and last
year on the Mid-Atlantic All-Ser
vice Team, Zyggie Czarboski, for
mer All-American at Notre Dame,
and Garvin Mugg, who tips the
scales at 226 pounds and towers
6 feet 4 inches; guard Len Akin
from Baylor University, and cen
ter Louis Sossaman, former Uni

wart.
That will give you some idea of
the power of the visitors. Scout

For the md^t part the Cloud
busters have spent the past week
in working on a passing offense to
cope' with the Commodore’s run
ning attack. • Also, much time was
sperit. on defensive play.
