Graham Is First All-American Cloudbustei

OnAPServiceTeam
Cadet Otto Graham, an All-
American in 1943 at Northwest
ern University, became the first
football player in the history of
this Pre-Flight School to make a
nationwide All-American serv
ice team when he was named on
the Associated Press eleven re
leased this week.
Len Eshmont, who played
here in 1942; John Woudenberg,
tackle from St. Mary’s Pre-
Flight, and George Strohmeyer,
center who played for the Sea-
hawks of Iowa, also were in
cluded on the first team, which
embraced seven players from the
Navy and four from the Army.
Other than Graham, no less
than six players on the Cloud-
buster team received honorable
mention. They were Wayne
Harding, Wally Schumacher and
Melbourne Sheehan, ends; Ray
Bray and Dale Pulver, tackles,
and Stan Koslowski, fullback.
Graham Is Surprised
Graham’s selection was ex
pected by everyone except Gra
ham. “Naturally, I’m surprised,”
Otto commented. “Frankly I
don’t see how they selected me.
There were a 100 good backs
among the service teams this
fall.”
But the coaches and sports-
writers who saw Graham per
form thought differently. His
own coach, Lieut. Comdr. Glenn
Killinger, considers Graham to
be as cool a back, as great a pass
er, and as fine a defensive man
as he’s ever seen.
Coach Eddie Cameron of Duke
stated after the Duke-Pre-Flight
contest that Otto was the dif
ference between victory and de
feat. “He does everything and
does it well,” he said.
Comdr. Oscar Hagberg of the
Naval Academy remarked that,
“Graham was the coolest back
under pressure I’ve ever seen.”
Camp Peary players selected
him as the outstanding back to
perform against them, and Bain-
bridge chose him on its all-op-
ponent team.
Dudley, Trippi Chosen
Two other players who per
formed against the Cloudbusters
were on the first team. One is
Russ Letlow, Camp Peary, and
the other is Garrard Ramsey,
Bainbridge. Both are guards.
Included in the first string
backfield, along with Graham,
were Eshmont, Norman NAB;
Bill Dudley, Randolph Field, and
Charley Trippi, Third Air Force.
All are well known in this sec
tion. Dudley played college ball
at Virginia and performed twice
in Kenan Stadium against North
Carolina, and Trippi starred last
year at ORD in Greensboro and
this year at Charlotte.
Jack Russell, Randolph Field,
BALL HAWKS—High in the air after that rebound go two Cherry
Pointers and two Cloudbusters, and as evident from the photo
finish the Marines get it. Innocent but interested observers on the
left are Leaky (16), of Pre-Flight, and Chema (4), of Cherry
Point. The mid-air quartet are Vanbredakoff (11) and Allen
(with only head showing), of Cherry Point, and Gleasner (26) and
Tobias (23), of the Cloudbusters.
OTTO GRAHAM
and Nick Susoeff, Second Air
Force, were the end choices, and
Joe Stydahar, Fleet City NTS,
teamed with Woudenberg at
tackle.
The second team backfield
lists Jack Jacobs, Fourth Air
Force; Charlie Justice, Bain
bridge; Glenn Dobbs, Second Air
Force, and William Daley, Ft
Pipce. Vic Schleich, Iowa Pre-
Flight, also made the second
team at his tackle position.

Quint Loses, Then
Smothers Seymour
Johnson By 75-36
Just what happened to Coad
Dyke Raese’s Cloudbusters Tues
day night against Seymour-Johti
son Field no one seems to knoW
but Pre-Flight supporters art
hoping for more of the same nex
Monday at 1930 when the Lau
renberg-Maxton quintet invade
Chapel Hill.
The starting Cloudbuster line-,
up read the same as the on^
which lost to Cherry Point of
last Saturday night, 54 to 41. Bu<
it played differently, so much iJj
fact that after five minutes of
play there was little doubt of tW
outcome. That the final scorf
favored the Pre-Flighters, 75 tc
36, came as a surprise to none o\
those present. |
Mehl High Scorer j
It was Bob Mehl, the lank>
forward from Indianapolis, wW
led the scoring parade with 2^
points. Otto Graham, still not b\
top playing condition, contrib',
uted 15 points as did Ed Leakey'^
a guard. !
Ken Poppe led the scoring ioi
the losers with 11 points, but th«
play of Ed Strall, former All'
American at the University o‘
Pittsburgh, caught the fancy oi
the crowd. The latter contrib
uted eight points in addition to
an excellent passing performance'
Coach Raese used every playef
in uniform—15 in all—during
the contest. Other than the gam^
Monday night one more is sched'
uled against Ft. Bragg here ol'
next Wednesday night.
Several changes probably wil^
occur during the next 10 days.
Ed Leakey, a regular guard, an(^
J. R. Tobias, a forward are oi^
leave. They will miss the tw^
contests next week, and also ^
game with Duke here on Dec. 29
W. D. Meador will replace Lea'
key on the starting five, while
Tobias, the first forward substi'
tute, will be replaced by S. A'
Meserve.
Class Ring Hunted
A small class ring with “Appo
mattox” engraved on the face
has been lost by Cadet J. M.
Hamilton, 57th, presumably in
vicinity of Woollen Gym. Initials
on the inside were “A.E.P.” Ca
det Hamilton is anxious for its
return.
