At Sea Aboard ^USS Chapel HilV
Constructed to give cadets and other personnel the “feel” of a
ship, a replica of a destroyer bridge has been completed aboard the
station and now is being used by AFTs. Included on the bridge are
a compass, navigation chartboard, running lights, pelorus, taffrail
log, Aldis lamp and engine-room telegraphs. Lieut. Liberty Nichol
son and Chief J. J. Nowicki performed the organization work.

Here Postponed
Due to the sudden illness of
Edward Bowes, who earlier
in the week was hospitalized in
New York, the talent auditions
slated to start on this station on
Wednesday, Dec. 27, have been
Posponed indefinitely.
Major Bowes’ New York office
advised that the well-known
amateur talent-seeker will be off
the air for several weeks and
that scheduled programs had
°een deferred.
The initial audition was to
have provided the entertain
ment for the “Happy Hour”
J^ext week. Auditions were to
have continued here thru Jan.
when winners were to have
heen selected. A trip to New
*ork and cash prizes were the
awards.
Invitation Dance Has
Navy Junior Guests
, An invitation dance for
teen-aged girls and boys, in
cluding many Navy juniors,
^ill be held Tuesday, Dec. 26,
at the Officers’ Club.
The dance will get under
'vay at 2030 and wind up at
2330. The club will be closed
to regular members during this
time.

The Navy during 1944 pur
chased 790,000,000 tax-free and
^5,000,000 tax-paid cigarettes for

Good reports have been com
ing back to the station on the
first Pre-Flight band to be sta
tioned here.
Word from Lieut. G. E. Hat
field, formerly of ENS and now
stationed in the Pacific, reveals
the band is still intact and do
ing a great job of entertaining
the servicemen out there.
The letter was addressed to
Lieut. Comdr. Renwick Curry,
head of ENS. Leader of the band
while here was James B. Per
sons, Music, with William H.
Cole, Mus2c, and Melvin L.
Wall, Mus2c, co-leaders of the
swing section.

The room for preparing surgi

Waters. It will be open, how
ever, on Jan. 4, and Navy wives
are urged to turn out on that
day.

Drive purchases by Navy person
nel totaled $61,424,720.

From the Office of Coordinator
of War Bonds further figures on
the total sales by the Navy were
released, including the statement
that the program piled up a
total of $32,097,048.72 in pur
chases in November, for a 28 per
cent increase over November,
1943. Purchases for the first 11
months of 1944 were $455,499,-
825, as against $242,094,652 for
the same period last year, or an
increase of 88 per cent.
A milestone of great signifi
cance was reached last month
when effective allotments passed
the 2-million mark. Of the 2,-
000.916 allotments in effect as
of 30 November, 1,655,302 were
Navy; 260,000 Marine Corps, and
$85,614 Coast Guard.
Chapel Hill Kids
Are To Be Guests
Of Base Next Week
Carolina Pre-Flight will ob
serve Christmas in traditional
fashion again this year when,
true to the time-honored Naval
custom, children of Chapel Hill
townspeople will be guests of the
NPFS at Navy Hall on Tues
day, Dec. 26, and at Carrboro on
the following day.
White children of the town
and adjacent area between the
ages of six and 12 are invited to
view the big Christmas tree and
join in caroling at Navy Hall
between 1430 and 1630. Ice
cream, cookies and other refresh
ments will be offered, as well as
small gifts.
At the band center at Carr
boro colored children will gather.
There also will be a tree, re
freshments and gifts. The time
will be the same.
Small Fry Freddie Farrell, 10,
of Cleveland, dug a discarded
comic book from an ash can. It
contained $1,150 in war bonds.
