Page Four CLOUDBUSTER — SPORTS Friday, February 2, 1945 Courts Ring Bill Scheduled For Tonight Ringmen Facej They’ll Compete This Week-End ToughEvening Against Terps A hard evening is in store for Coach Ab Young’s ringmen when they square off with Uni versity of Maryland Terrapins in Woollen gym tonight immedi ately following the basketball game. With both Joe Packo and Howard Anunson sidelined with nose injuries suffered in the meet dropped to the tough Cherry Point Marines, 5-2, last Satur day, several cadets will be fight ing their first bouts for the ‘Bust ers against the potent Mary landers. A perennial producer of strong ring teams, Maryland this year has another good squad that lost to the unusually tough North Carolina mittmen by a narrow 5-3 margin. To make a hard job harder, the ’Busters will start the meet with a bout handicap for lack of a fighter in the 120-pound class. Cadets who will probably represent Pre-Flight tonight are: Jim Calvey, 127 pounds; A1 Salkowski, 135 pounds; Byron Hostetler, 145 pounds; W. C. Craigmile, 155 pounds; M. Schu macher, 165 pounds; K. W. Rockstroh, 175 pounds, and Ben Lum, heavyweight. Schumacher, Rockstroh, and Lum will be in their first fights for the ’Busters. Three Pre-Flight athletes who may figure importantly this week-end here in swimming and boxing competition are shown in ready poses. Top left is Cadet A. L. Hausman, 64th Batt, and at right is Cadet Albert Stanley, two Cloudbuster tank stars who were scholastic champions. They will swim tomorrow in the Caro- linas A.A.U. Open Meet. At bot tom is Cadet A1 Salkowski, clever 135-pounder, who boxes tonight against the University of Maryland. Cadet Dale Leakey^ Improving At Guards Is One Of ^Busters^ Smoothest Cagers One of the smoothest ball^- handlers on the Cloudbuster quint is Cadet Dale Leakey, steadily improving guard from Andrews, Ind. Leakey, who won four letters in basketball and as many in baseball at Andrews high school, started his court career when in the sixth grade. During his senior year in high school Leakey was selected on the all- regional and all-sectional teams and the Andrews team won every game, plus the sectional tournament. Dale averaged about 15 points per game, hit ting as high as 24 points in a single contest. Hobbies? “Well,” he says, “a little bit of everything, I guess. My father is a Diesel engineer and I sort of like to fool around with that kind of work, too. I dabbled at construction work during the summer seasons.” Dale has three brothers. One is a staff sergeant in the infantry somewhere in Germany, another is an ensign in the Merchant Ma rine, and a third soon will en list in the Navy in hopes of be coming an aircrewman. Pre-Flight Enters 23 Cadets In AAU Swimming Carnival Approximately 23 cadets will represent Carolina Pre-Flight tomorrow night in the Sixth An nual Carolinas A.A.U. Swim Meet in Bowman Gray pool and in three special races for serv icemen the Cloudbusters are conceded good chances. The first event is scheduled for 1900. Cadets Stanley and Maas in the 50-meter backstroke, Haus man and Bostwick in the 50- meter free style and Van Wie and Cuniberti in the 50-meter breast stroke will be the stand ard-bearers in the service races. Stanley, who held the Iowa State backstroke title, also will compete in the 100-meter A.A.U. event. Dippy, another standout, will be entered in the 400-meter A.A.U. free-style. Cadet C. P. Willis, winner against Duke re cently, will dive for Pre-Flight. Wrestlers Defeat Blue Devils, 19-9 Cloudbuster matmen defeated Duke’s Southern Conference wrestling champs last Wednes day, 19-9, in the first of two meets between the teams. Coach S. S. Hollobaugh’s grapplers won five of the eight matches, two on falls. A return meet with the Blue Devils is scheduled for Durham on Feb. 9. The summary: 121-pound class: Titsworth of Pre-Flight pinned Miller for five points. 128-pound class: Kusturiss, of Duke, de- Jax NAS Cagers To Seek Revenge On Woollen Floor Another standout basketball game, followed by a boxing meet, is scheduled for tonight Woollen gym when the Cloud- busters tackle Jacksonville Naval Air Station in a return engage- ment, starting at 1930. In the ring portion of the double - header Coach Al^ Young’s mittmen will entertain the University of Maryland. The bouts will begin about 2100. Included among Pre-Flight’s 1^ victories in 17 games was a 53- to-46 thriller over Jacksonville on Jan. 20 and prospects for an' other rousing contest are bright. Georgia Beaten 35-25 This is one of the two horn® games scheduled for the next te^ days. On Monday the Cloud' busters will entertain Wake For' est. Coach Dyke Raese’s quint won No. 12 last Saturday when tb® Georgia Pre-Flight SkycrackefS were beaten, 35-25, in a slov^' game. Two nights later, hoW' ever, the ’Busters ran into ^ slump and fell before CamP Lejeune Marines, 37-40. The ‘Busters’ 13th triumpl^ came Wednesday night when the Edenton Marines were defeated) 65-44, as Dean Meador poured 1^ points through the loop. Grahai^ and Leakey each accounted fof 12. The score at half-time wa^ 29-17 in favor of Pre-Flight. Graham Still Top Basket Marksman Prior to the Edenton game Wednesday, the scoring race fo^ the Cloudbuster quint still foun^ Cadet Otto Graham on top wit^ a total of one hundred ninety' three points. Otto, who misseo the first two games of the seasoli' has racked up sixty-four fiel^^ goals and sixty-five free throws- In second place is little Dea^ Meador, with one hundred sixty' six points to his credit.
