duced a bill calling for manda
tory peacetime physical training
for American youth.
The bill recommended the es
tablishment of a nine-member
Commission which would be
charged with promoting fitness
through “physical training, com
petition in all athletic sports,
Campaign and kindred activities.”

“Movement,” Rep. Weiss stated in
explanation. “Its one purpose is ,
to build a physically-sound youth.

The first group of former V-5
students, who were separated or
withdrew from training under
satisfactory conditions, reported
here last week for refresher
courses commensurate with their
previous progress in the training
program.
Included in the initial group
to resume V-5 training were a
total of 139, consisting of (a) 71
who were separated subsequent
to the successful completion of
Pre-Flight School, and (b) 68
who voluntarily withdrew from
training subsequent to the com
pletion of the Naval Flight Pre
paratory School course, but prior
to successful completion of Pre-
Flight School.
Those in group (a) will be
given a four-week refresher
course here, and those in group
(b) an 11-week course of in
struction. Nine enlisted students
are included in the first group,
and one in the latter.

Drive Extentled
For Navy Relief
Society Funds
The annual drive for funds for
the Navy Relief Society on this
station will be extended from
Thursday, 15 February, to Sat
urday, 17 February, it has been
announced by Chaplain George
W. Cummins.
Contributions should be made
to departmental representatives,

Tea At Officers’ Club
A tea for officers’ wives,
WAVE officers and nurses is
scheduled for next Wednesday,
21 February, at the Officers’
'Club, starting at 1600.
Beginning at 2030 the same
evening the Four Clefs will
stage their weekly entertain
ment for members and their
wives.
More Bingo Coming Up
Another Bingo session will be
held at the Officers’ Club next
Friday, 23 February, beginning
at 2000. Prizes again will be of
fered.
Called Out Shortly
Lieut. Edward W. (Wes)
Schulmerich, former outfielder
for the Boston Braves, Phila
delphia Phillies and Cincinnati
Reds, will serve as head coach of
the Cloudbuster baseball team
this year, it has been announced
by Lieut. Comdr. James P.Raugh,
Commanding Officer.
The veteran National Leaguer,
a native of Hillsboro, Ore., re
ported to Pre-Flight at Chapel
Hill last November after having
served at Iowa Pre-Flight and
NAS, Kaneohe Bay, T. H. He
now is assistant coach of soccer.
Lieut. Schulmerich announced
today that all pitching and
catching candidates are to sub
mit their names to him at 107,
Emerson Stadium, and that out
door practice will start shortly
so as to have the hurlers in
shape before infielders and out
fielders are called out. •
Fifth Among Loop Hitters
The recent detachment of
Lieut. Comdr. Glenn Killinger
created the baseball vacancy
which Lieut. Schulmerich will
fill. Lieut. Comdr. Killinger,
who coached both varsity foot
ball and baseball, was succeeded
as head of the football training
course by Lieut. Comdr. Paul
Bryant. Under Lieut. Comdr.
Killinger the Cloudbuster cadets
won the pennant last year in
the Ration League, a loop com
posed of Duke, the University of
North Carolina, North Carolina
State and Pre-Flight.
The new head diamond coach
began his professional career in
1927 with Los Angeles of the
Pacific Coast League. In 1931 he
moved to the Braves and in 1932
he was with the Phillies, for
whom he batted .318 and fin
ished fifth among the league’s
hitters. In 1934 he was with
Cincinnati. After subsequent
“tours of duty” with Toronto
and Los Angeles, Lieut. Schul
merich played and managed in
the Western International
League before retiring from
baseball in 1939. After entering
the Navy in 1942 he was sta
tioned at Iowa Pre-Flight, going
to Hawaii in June, 1943.
