Page Four CLOUDBUSTER—SPORTS Friday, February 23, 1945 Quintet Ends Play With 16 Wins, Six Losses For Season Dropping the season finale to the undefeated Naval Academy quintet by the narrow margin of 42-38 last Saturday, the Cloud- buster court team finished its schedule with 16 wins in 22 starts for a win percentage of .727. In the tilt at Annapolis, Navy led 21-15 at the intermission only to lose the lead to Pre-Flight in the second half when the ’Bus ters ran the score to 30-25. The Midshipmen, however, surged ahead in the last six minutes to earn their 11th straight win of the season. Bob Mehl, Pre-Flight forward, was high scorer for the game with five goals and a like number of free tosses for a total of 15 points. For the season Coach Dyke Raese’s squad rolled up 1,189 points in their 22 tilts for a game average of 54. Meanwhile the opposition was held to 931, for an average of 42. Graham Tops For Season Although absent in five of the games, Otto Graham, former All- America court star from North western, was top man in the scoring race with 84 goals and 75 charity tallies for an aggre gate of 243. His game average was 14. Runner-up was Dean Meador, who accounted for 90 goals and 27 free throws for a total of 207 and an average of 12. Third ’Buster to average bet ter than 10 points a game was Bob Mehl who registered 201 in 20 contests. The top eight scorers for the season follow: GP FG FT TP Avg. Emory & Henry and Maryland fell before the ’Busters, Virginia was tied, and Cherry Point and Maryland (in a return engagement), emerged victorious. Bottom row, left to right; J. Calvey, D. T. Tank Meet Tomorrow The swimming meet between the Cloudbusters and Camp Le- jeune Marines, originally sched uled for next Wednesday in the Bowman Gray pool here, has been moved up to 1515 tomor row, it has been announced by the Athletic Department. Possible Navy Backfield A possible starting backfield for the Naval Academy’s 1945 team is Dick Duden, blocking back and captain; All-America Bob Jenkins; Bob Kelly, trans feree from Notre Dame, and Tony Ministi, first-string full back at Penn last year. Howie Krist, St. Louis Cardi nal pitcher, has been wounded in France. —Save Fuel—Save Paper- The Oomph Gal Lady in distress—Ann Sheri dan doesn’t look it here but in “The Doughgirls,” to be shown tomorrow at the free Village Theater movie. Miss Sheridan has plenty of troubles in wartime Washington. So do the Misses Alexis Smith and Jane Wyman but things work out, as you may discover. Runs 4:10-Mile Nine Times Gil Dodds, who recently quit track, ran nine mile races under 4:10. Glenn Cunningham, pred ecessor to Dodds as king of the milers, ran only six under that time. Lieuts. Laird And Craft Assist As ^Buster Diamond Coaches Lieut. Greene F. Laird, assistant battalion officer, and Lieut- (jg) Harry F. Craft, assistant survival instructor, have been named by Lieut. Comdr. Burton A. Ingwersen, Athletic Director, as aS' sistant coaches of the Cloudbuster varsity baseball squad for 1945- ★ Lieut. Edward W. Schulmericl^ was announced as head coach ^ week ago. Lieut. Laird, a native of Df' catur, Ga., won three letters football and baseball and four basketball at Davidson Colleg^ and later played profession^* baseball at Carrollton, Ga. served as athletic director at tawba College and at University School, Atlanta, Ga., before r®' turning to Davidson in 1929 assistant coach. He remained 3^ Davidson until 1939, when 1^^ moved to V.P.I. as assistant coach. Lieut, (jg) Craft, centerfield®^ for the Cincinnati Reds befor^ entering the Navy, was one the National League’s star out' fielders since 1937 and a twO' time performer in world series- In 1939 the Reds lost to Yankees and in 1940 they de' feated the Tigers. Before comii^J to the majors Lieut, (jg) Cra^ played with Monessen of Penn State League, El Dorado the Cotton States, Waterloo ^ the Western and Syracuse of International. He was traded ^ the Yankees after the 1942 son but entered the Navy befo^^ reporting, serving first at NaVX Pre-Flight, Del Monte, Calif., at Flight Prep, Liberty, Mo. Wrestlers Facing Tough Assignment In Annapolis Meet Coach S. S. Hollobaugh’s grapplers, twice victors over Duke’s Southern Conference champions, will face their toughest assignment of the sea son when they tangle with the strong Naval Academy team at Annapolis tomorrow night. The ’Busters will be out to mar the perfect record of the Midshipmen who not only are undefeated but unscored on in varsity competition this season. Scheduled to wrestle for Pre- Flight in the final meet of the season are: 121-pound class, G. F. Titsworth; 128-pound class, J. K. Keller; 136-pound class, N. E. Clark; 145-pound class, R. B. Hamsher; 155-pound class, S. S. Paterno; 165-pound class, D. E. Kelley; 175-pound class, J. A. Cadwallader; heavyweight, M. E. Litz. On his recent 51st birthday, Babe Ruth, all-time homerun champion, weighed 260 pounds.
