Among the pitching hopefuls^ is W. K. Knutsen, 11-R-A, prom ising right hander shown on the left warming up for an intra squad game. Below the camera stops the ball in mid-air while the batter prepares to lay down that bunt. Pre-Flight has already played several practice games with the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, who along with Duke, North Carolina State and the Cloudbusters comprise the Ra tion League. Pre-Flight is the defending titleholder in the league which opens April 2. —Lt. Lawson— (Continued from Page 1) gone into shore when the Jap planes, flying low, sneaked up on the fleet of small ships. Lt. Law son, midships, saw the first sui cide plane as it plunged into the port side of the LST. “It created quite a disturbance,’’ he says. “Either a bomb or a torpedo he was carrying went off. Then the fact that we had some ammuni tion and gasoline didn’t help matters, either.” When the gasoline and ammu nition exploded Lt. Lawson was blown through a midships’ hatch and, while lying on the deck, felt another plane crash into the starboard side. “With midships all aflame,” he recalls, “most of us raced toward the fantail just as the third plane struck us nearly midships. Even then we nearly got it for keeps because a fourth plane dove for the fan- tail and undoubtedly would have wiped us out except for the fact that when only yards away our 3-50 gun found the range and blew him up. We certainly gave the pointer on that gun a cheer.” Mindoro Tour Short With his unit badly depleted as a result, Lt. Lawson’s stay on Mindoro was short. In a matter of hours after being picked up in the water by PT’s and destroyers and landed, Lt. Lawson and the remainder of the battered NABU-5 were taken back to Leyte and, from there, to New Guinea and the United States, where he was given a 30-days survivor’s leave.
