Cloudbusters Open With Navy Tomorrow
Flick Hurls First
Contest Of Season

emy tomorrow in the opening
game of the season at Annapolis.
A squad of 23 players, plus the
coaching staff, will make the trip
to Crabtown.

the bat.

the trip include Outfielders Han
cock and George; Catchers
Brown, Shourds, Brunwasser
and Benedict, and Pitchers
Heinemen, Nicholas, Waller and
Knutsen.
Following the Navy game the
Cloudbusters will journey to
Raleigh to play North Carolina
State on Monday in the opening
game of the Ration League. This
game will start at-1500.

CHIN-UP BOY—Top chinner of
the regiment is Cadet Z. G. Ty
son, 4-R-A, who recently has
established a new station record
of 35 chin-ups, seven better than
the old mark. Tyson tied with
R. Simendinger, 4-R-A, for high
honors in the testing program
with an average of 3.6. In addi
tion to his 35 chin-ups, Tyson
did 40 push-ups, registered 24 in
the Sargent jump, completed the
speed agility routine in 28.8 sec
onds, and had a PFI of 80.

Lt. W. B. Porterfield’s 67th
Batt, which was nosed out of the
regimental title by less than six
points during the previous com
petition period, came back
strong to take top honors by a
comfortable margin of 89 points
during the past fortnight.
First places in Academics and
in the Sports Program gave the
67th Batt 231 Va of its 269 win
ning total, the remaining 37V2
points coming in Military.
Lt. K. O. Drexel’s 65th Batt
finished in the runner-up spot
with an overall total of 180
points, while Lt. C. A. Robin
son’s 64th placed third with 152.
The rousing and well staged
Sports Program championships
in Woollen gym last Friday eve
ning were marked by close play
in all of the events, but the 67th
managed to win the finals in
gym and tumbling, wrestling,
swimming, and boxing.
Competition Keen
The 67th gym and tumbling
team outpointed the 65th’s by
the slim margin of 5,124 to 5,101.
Individual competition was as
keen as the battle for team hon
ors, with Richard Bomkamp of
the 67th emerging as high man
with 400 points, followed closely
by Paul Wenberg of the 65th
with 395 and David Liederman
of the 67th with 392.
In wrestling the 67th, coached
(js) J- W. Glassford, out
pointed Lt. Allan Learned’s 65th
grapplers 35-34, with the final
match deciding the outcome.
Lt. (jg) L. F. Heminger’s 67th
swimmers had to come through
m t^ final relay event to defeat
Lt. Doyle Cady’s 64th tankmen,
43-33.
Boxers of the 67th, coached by
Lt. (jg) A. L. Throckmorton,
edged out Lt. Frank Steen’s 65th
mittmen, 5-4.
Soccer was the only finals
event in which the 67th partici
pated and lost. Here again the
decision was by the narrowest
of margins, with Lt. (jg) W. R.
Raudenbush’s French Unit kick
ing through a 1-0 decision over
Lt. James Ryba’s 67th.
Basketball, the only finals in
which the 67th was not repre
sented, went to Lt. V. O. Ash
ford’s 68th quintet by a 38-26
score over Lt. G. A. Bankston’s
66th.

USNR, former All-America
football star from Notre
Dame, has been assigned to
teach Naval aviation cadets
in their primary flight train
ing.
The ex-halfback has re
turned from combat duty as
pilot of a fighter based on an
aircraft carrier in the Pacific.
He has made 34 combat mis
sions and holds the Air Medal.
Tennis Team Forming
A Cloudbuster tennis team is
being formed and candidates are
invited to attend practice ses
sions each day at 1600 on the
clay courts.
