Page Four CLOUDBUSTER — SPORTS Friday, April 13, 1945 Living Up To Name, ’Busters Hit Hard But Lose 3 Games With an average of over 11 runs per game in five contests to date, the Cloudbusters have in dicated they have a happy fac ulty for making runs and enemy pitchers miserable. What is wor rying Head Coach Wes Schul- merich, however, is the Cloud busters’ own pitching, along with occasional lapses afield. The slab shortage, plus mis takes, have been costly. In five games to date the ’Buster have won only two, both against Camp Butner. In Ration League competition Pre-Flight has dropped both starts to North Carolina State. After scoring 14 runs against the Naval Academy and seven against North Carolina State— and losing both games—the ’Buster hitters bore down with a vengeance last week against Camp Butner and took matters strictly into their own hands. Rallying to overcome an early lead, they pounded out a 9-to-6 victory over Butner before 3,000 spectators at the Army base on Saturday and then went berserk the following day at Emerson Stadium to win a 21-to-6 decision in a seven-inning affair. Lefty Riggan, a southpaw curve-baller, not only checked the Cloudbusters in the opening Ration League tilt in Raleigh, 9 to 7, but repeated last Wednes day in Emerson Stadium when he won, 12 to 6. State, which failed to win a game last season as Pre-Flight captured the title, piled up a 6 to 1 lead going into the last of the fifth and appar ently had an easy victory. Coach Schulmerich’s club, however, awoke suddenly and pounded Riggan for five runs to tie the score at 6-6, largely due to Lawrence’s base-cleaning triple. Riggan, however, steadied and State jumped on Bryan, and Roudenbush to pile up another half dozen scores. Wilson, centerfielder for the Red Terrors, did most of the damage to the Cloudbusters with his four hits in five trips. Army Stars Ineligible Bobby Dodd and Max Minor, of Army’s unbeaten football team, won’t play next year. Both have been declared in eligible because each played four years in inter-collegiate football. Doug Kenna and Dale Hall, other Army backfield stars, will be commissioned in June. Against Camp Butner in two games last week-end Bozich col lected six hits in 10 times at bat mcludmg a home run and a triple. In opening the Spring season last Saturday on Fetzer Field Coach Charles Beetham’s team? had too much balance for the Blue Devils. Pre-Flight cap tured eight first places and tied for another, revealing strength in the middle dis tance and dis tance events, low hurdles, the high and broad jumps, pole vault and re lay. Duke’s Jim LaRue, also a foot ball star, was the high individ ual scorer, winning the 100 and 220 yard dashes and finishing second to Pre-Flight’s J. A. Mc- coy, 11-R-A, in the broad jump.
