Page Four CLOUDBUSTER—SPORTS Friday, April 27, 1945 Duke, UNC Are Foes In Track, Baseball Unbeaten Tarheels Offer Cadets Test In Ration League A disappointment thus far in Ration League competition, the Cloudbuster baseball team to morrow will have a golden op portunity to atone for earlier de feats when the unbeaten, pace- setting University of North Caro lina nine is encountered at 1500 in Emerson Stadium. The Tarheels, ^ coached by Bunn Hearn, twice have met and conquered ^ North Carolina State, the team which has been a nemesis to the Cloudbusters since the season opened. State won the first three games played with Pre-Flight this season. A fourth game was rained out Wednesday and was due to be played Thursday, too late for this edition. Tomorrow’s game with UNC is the only one scheduled for this week-end. The next Ration League game will be a week from Saturday, with Duke as the foe. State 3 2 .600 Duke 0 0 .000 Pre-Flight 0 3 .000 Baker^ Top Hitter^ Slugs For 22 Bases In 21 Times At Bat Not only does Catcher Bill Baker still pace the Cloudbuster hitters with a .523 average but his 11 hits in 21 times at bat have been good for 22 bases. Baker twice has slammed for the circuit and, in addition, has a triple and three doubles to his credit. Three other ’Busters are hit ting above .300, with Frank Shaughnessy of the 65th Batt clouting at .351, Bill Hancock of 11-R-B hitting .307 and Anthony Bozich, also of 11-R-B, socking .305. The leading hitters who have made at least 15 official trips to the plate as of the Camp Le- jeune game last Sunday follow: Ab. R. H. Av. Cadet squadron representatives hoisted flags rep resenting the 12 sport squad rons. A Pre-Flight softball league composed of five officer teams and three from the crew opened play. The officers won two of the three games played against the enlisted men. Cadet Paul Owen of the 23rd Batt, for five years a soloist with Fred Waring’s band, is a leading member of the Cadet glee club here. The Cloudbuster nine defeated Carolina and Davidson, but bowed to Duke. In the Ration League standings, Pre-Flight stands third with three won and three lost. Cloudbuster Band Marks Anniversary Upward of 80 members of the Cloudbuster band and their guests attended a buffet supper and dance at the Carrboro head quarters last Friday in celebra tion of the band’s first anni versary aboard this station. Cmdr. James P. Raugh, com manding officer, was among those present and in a short ad dress he congratulated the band on its anniversary. The band glee club rendered a choral offering that was re ceived enthusiastically. -Buy More War Bonds- Cinder Team Seeks A Second Win Over Devils At Durham A third track victory in four meets will be the goal of the Cloudbusters tomorrow when Coach Charles Beetham’s squad opposes Duke at Durham. It will be the second meet between the two teams, Pre-Flight having opened its season with a 73-to-57 triumph over the Blue Devils. Beaten only by Georgia Pre- Flight this season, the Cloudbus- ters will reign favorites tomof' row but keener competition is expected as Duke is reported more advanced now and will be competing on its own track. Latest victim of the ’Buster trackmen was the University of Virginia, which bowed here last Saturday in a spirited meet, 65 1/5 to 60 4/5. As has been the case in each winning meet this season, superiority in track events—especially at the middle distances—brought victory to Pre-Flight. Daum Paces ’Busters Coach Beetham’s cadets won five first places, four runner-uP honors and seven third places the eight track events. Virgin^ won four first places and a tie in six track events. John Daum, 64th Batt, again paced the ’Busters, winning the 120-yard high hurdles and the 220-yard low hurdles. C. S- Bacik of the 65th captured the 440, with J. F. Moore and W. J- Cunningham helping to create & clean sweep in this race, and other first-place winners were Goode in the 880; Buckworth and Francis, who tied in the two-mile run; McCoy in the broad jump and Gregg, Neal- Barrow and Swenson, who tied for first place with Virginia’^ Speer in the high jump. An order for 2,000,000 base' balls and 58,000 baseball uni' forms has been placed for spring delivery by the Army and Na^' Cloudbuster Nine Shows .500 Average For Competition Outside Ration Loop While not so successful in Ra tion League play, the Cloudbus ters are able to show a .500 per centage for six games of non league competition following their 7-to-4 victory last Sunday over the Camp Lejeune Marines. Catawba Visits Emerson Behind the six-hit pitching of Donald Roudenbush and Gene Flick, Pre-Flight tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning and then staged a four-run uprising in the third frame to take a lead that never was lost. Thirteen hits bounced off the ’Buster bats. Against Catawba College the day before, however, the Cloud' busters did not fare so well. JacK Taylor, 17-year-old hurler. If down Coach Wes Schulmerich’^ nine with three hits and struck out 10 to win, 8 to 2. Cleveland and Bryan, ’Buster pitchers, gave up a dozen hits. Two more games outside oj the Ration League will be played this week. On Tuesday the Ca' tawba team will visit Emerson Stadium for a second game and on Wednesday the Cloudbuster^ will entertain the ORD Tech' Hawks. Both games will start 1600.
