Friday, May 18, 1945 Commander Kane Guest of Honor At Sports Dinner Comdr. William R. (Killer) Kane, USN, head of physical and ttiilitary training for naval avia tion, under the Director of the Aviation Training Division, Of fice of Chief of Naval Opera tions, was guest of honor at a dinner last week in the Pine Room of Lenoir Hall attended by athletic directors and coaches from nearby colleges, Carolina spiortswriters and radio announc ers, and naval officers. Commodore O. O. Kessing, Who is in Chapel Hill on leave from the Pacific, was the rank ing officer present, while Comdr. James P. Raugh, commanding of ficer of the Pre-Flight School, served as toastmaster. In his brief talk Comdr. Jackson of the Supreme Court has been ap pointed by President Truman as chief counsel of the United States in preparing and prosecut ing charges against the leading war criminals of the Axis powers. tJivo ^ears Plans got underway this week to celebrate *the first anniversary of the station May 23rd. Capt. Joe Foss (now Major Foss) is scheduled to visit the Pre-Flight school where he will address the cadets. Major Foss was the first American to equal Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker’s rec ord of 26 aircraft shot down. A swing band composed of six cadets and two enlisted men joined the ranks of entertainers this week on the station. Current ration league stand ings place the Cloudbusters in third place with four wins and six losses. Carolina leads the league with 8 won and 2 lost. 50,000 Planes Have Landed On the Ranger Months ago, the 10-year-old Ranger, veteran aircraft carrier of our Navy, celebrated an unusual event. Naval history was made when the 50,000th plane was landed oh her decks. Sacramento, Cal. (CNS)—A bill has been presented to the State Assembly which would provide that any Californian found guilty of beating his wife would be given a flogging. Fats^ Paper^ Iron Salvaged Here In Large Amounts In co-operation with the gov ernment policy of salvaging all possible waste materials, sizable amounts of scrap iron and waste paper have been collected here at the Pre-Flight School. Lieut. Comdr. Edmund M. Waller, senior member of the Conservation and Salvage Board, has announced that for the month of April a total collection of approximately 18 tons of waste paper has been made. Dur ing this same period nearly one ton of scrap iron has been col lected. —New Exec— (Continued from Page 1) versities where the Pre-Flight units were to be located. He was among a group of officers sent on a survey trip to each of the schools for the purpose of fore seeing problems expected to arise where a Naval unit is su perimposed on the campus of a peacetime university. The orig inal curriculum followed by the Pre-Flight schools reflected in sorne measure his experiences at Ohio State, for he assisted in out lining several of the courses taught. Lt. Comdr. Hamilton reported to Chapel Hill on May 24, 1942, as head of the Academic Depart ment. He served in that role un til April, 1944, when he became Executive Officer. Lt. Comdr. Hamilton was grad uated from Ohio State in 1924 was admitted to the bar in 1928* and held the position of execu tive secretary of the College of Arts and Sciences when he en tered the Navy. The new Executive Officer Lt Comdr. Loader, is another vet eran in the Navy’s V-5 program and at one time headed the Es sentials of Naval Service course taught at Chapel Hill. Lt. Comdr. Loader attended New York University and was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy with the class of 1926. He was commissioned an ensign and served on the USS Arkansas tor three years before resigning to enter civilian business. He was assistant general manager a'^ L. Bamberger & Co., Newark* N. From January, 1943, until December, 1943, he served as academic director at the Navv Pre-Flight School, Del Monte^ Cal., and supervised and admin istered all ground training He reported for duty at the Naval Air Primary Training Command headquarters in January, 1944.
