Page Four CLOUDBUSTER—SPORTS Friday, May 18, 1945 65th Batt Wins Top Honors By Close Margin With boxing competition de cided by the heavyweight bout, swimming honors through the closing relay, and soccer in an overtime period, one of the most closely contested Sports Pro gram finals was staged at Fetzer Field and Woollen Gym on Friday evening. May 11th. The 65th Batt. emerged with 110 points to top the runner-up 68th which amassed a total of 90. Interested spectators noted several features of the evening, notably the performance of Cadet F. S. Shea of the 68th in the obstacle course. Shea ca vorted over the impediments in time close to the record. Cadet Blackburn of the 68th turned in a good performance in the 440, while Cadet W. M. Davis took the broad jump and ran second in the quarter mile. Cadet Pe- velka dashed over the low hurdles in the excellent time of 14.4. The 65th won over the 66th in a keenly contested soccer battle. A penalty kick brought about a tie score as the 66th led 1-0 for the major portion of the regular playing time. The 65th went on to victory during the overtime period. The spec tacular work of Cadet Chanay stood out for the losers. Scoring in the respective events were as follows: Boxing, 68 over 66, 5-4; wrestling 65 over HR, 54-15; swimming, HR over 69, 43-36; track, 68 over 65, 46-31; soccer “A,” 65 over 66 (overtime), 2-1; soccer “B,” 65 over HR, 4-?. It was the first Ration League victory for Pre-Flight and it pre vented Duke from climbing into a first place tie with the Uni versity of North Carolina. Although Pitchers Jack Fouts and Fred Gurney yielded 18 hits, twice as many as the ’Busters made, they kept the hits scattered. Two fast double plays by the Pre-Flight infield nipped potential scoring ralies, and only one error was charged to the ’Busters against six for Duke. The Durham collegians ral lied for four runs in the seventh to climb within a run of a tie, but Pre-Flight exploded for a quartet of markers in the eighth to clinch the game. Last week-end the ’Busters dropped a double-bill to the Marines at Camp LeJeune, 13 to 2 and 7-6. Games coming up include en counters with Carolina here at 1500 Saturday and with the Sec ond Field Artillery team at Fort Bragg on Wednesday. The Ration League standing as of May 17 follows: Won Lost Pet. Carolina , 5 1 .833 Duke 4 2 .667 State 6 6 .500 Pre-Flight. 1 7 .136 Duke Shades ’Buster Stars In Net Meet Coach Barney Welsh’s Pre- Flight court sharp-shooters jour neyed to Durham Wednesday afternoon, and in one of most keenly contested matches of the season, went down 4-5 before the big blue. Outstanding Pre-Flight per formers were Boocock 65-J-2, Swigert 65-J-2, Mabry 69-F-2, and Broad ll-RB-2. Others in competition were Kukuk 69-E-2, Jelinek 65-J-2, DeCherisey FU-8, and Akins 68-C-l. Coach Welsh was pleased with the showing of his team, and promises a tight match on the local courts Saturday afternoon when William and Mary tangles with the Pre-Flight aces, at 1430. Sold By the Candle Lloyds of London once sold ships by the candle. When a ship was being auctioned, a stump of candle was lighted. The instant the candle went out, the highest bidder at that moment got the ship. Lt. Lawson’s 68th Takes Honors In Batt Contest The 68th Batt. of Lieut. H. W- Lawson with a first place in mili tary, won the Battalion com petition during the fortnight period ending 11 May with a total of 215 points. The 65th Batt., Lieut. K. O- Drexel, was second with 195 and also the victor in Sports Pro gram competition. The 69th, Lieut. W. R. Holmer, led in Academics and Class Athletics. (CNS) — A stranger knocked at Mrs. Zelma Householder’s door and, when she answered slugged her with a blackjack. “Oops,” said he, apologizing. “I thought you were my boss’s wife.” One Star That Is Sitting Pretty LOVELY TO LOOK AT—That’s Gene Tierney in any kind of out fit, but we think that this is par ticularly winsome. Although she isn’t going to be at the Village Theater this week, we feel that her picture would brighten up any page of the Cloudbuster, so here goes. Miss Tierney is one of the up and coming new stars at 20th Century Fox Studios. ★ J*
