Picture on right shows Mabry in action. ’Busters Break Even In Two Net Meets Here After splitting even in the sin gles matches, Navy Pre-Flight School netmen took two of the three doubles events to edge out the University of North Carolina 5 to 4 last Wednesday for their first victory of the season. Clarence Mabry, Tom Broad, and Richard Swigart copped their singles events for the Cloudbusters, while Mabry and Broad, and Swigart and William Boocock teamed together for wins in the doubles. Singles; C. L. Mabry (PF) de feated C. Tuttle, 6-4, 6-4; T. Broad (PF) defeated D. Wilder, 6-4, 6-1; M. Davis (UNC) de feated W. R. Boocock, 6-2, 6-2; R H. Swigart (PF) defeated E. Baity, 6-1, 6-2; W. Weathers (UNC) defeated E. H. Kukuk, 6-4, 6-0; R. Rowe (UNC) de feated D. DeCherisey, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Doubles: Mabry and Broad (PF) defeated Tuttle and Weath ers, 6-0, 6-2; Boocock and Swi gart (PF) defeated Wilder and Davis, 6-3, 6-4; Anderson and Baity (UNC) defeated Kukuk and Akin, 7-5, 6-0. A strong William and Mary tennis team that is heading for the Southern Conference cham pionship this year handed Navy Pre-Flight netmen a 6-3 setback in a hard-fought meet here last Saturday. The top four collegians came through with victories in their singles matches and then paired off in the doubles for two more wins. W. R. Boocock and R. H. Swigart copped their singles matches for Pre-Flight and add ed another triumph in the doubles. The summary: Singles: B. Bartzen (W&M) defeated B. T. Welsh, 6-1, 6-3; B. Macken (W&M) defeated D. K. Watson, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5; R. Doll (W&M) defeated C. L. Mabry, 8-6, 3-6, 6-4; H. Ranee (W&M) defeated T. Broad, 6-2, 6-2; W. R. Boocock (PF) defeated P. El lison, 6-2, 6-0; R. H. Swigart (PF) defeated A. Taylor, 6-0, 6-3. Doubles: Bartzen and Macken (W&M) defeated Welsh and Wat son, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2; Doll and Ranee (W&M) defeated Mabry and Broad, 4-6, 11-9, 9-7; Boocock and Swigart (PF) defeated M. Hopkins and Taylor, 6-0, 6-2, Recruiting Quotas JJpped For Enlisted Waves Recruiting quotas for enlisted women for the Women’s Reserve, United States Naval Reserve, are being increased to 2,000 a month effective immediately. As of May 1 there were ap proximately 82,000 WAVES on active duty. 65th Batt Places Five Top Teams In Sports Final The 65th Battalion, under Lieut. K. O. Drexel, has qualified five teams in sports competition for the games scheduled on Fet- zer Field and the outdoor pool, beginning at 1900 tonight. Lieut. R. A. Raese, head of Sports Program, stated that this was the final competition period for the 65th, one of the strongest athletic groups Carolina Pre- Flight has had in these activities. Seven Batts competed for finals in each of five sports, and the upper brackets in boxing find Lieut. R. E. Peterson’s 65th facing the defending champions of the 68th, coached by Lieut. Clyde Carpenter. Tight battles are anticipated. The 65th and HR wrestling teams, directed by Lieut. Max Chapman and Lieut. R. B. Ham- sher, respectively, clash for the third consecutive time in this final. The outdoor pool will witness keen competition, beginning at 2015, between Lieut. Wm. Leck- onby’s 65th and Lieut, (jg) W. B. Dole’s 68th. The only team in the junior battalion, the 70th, to be repre sented in the finals is Lieut. C- J. Whiteside’s soccer squad- Lieut, (jg) R. B. McLeary’s 65th, avid for victory, constitutes the opposition. Tracksters of the 65th, under Lieut. J. E. Davison, will face Lieut, (jg) W. B. King’s aspiring HR’s. Considerable spirit is expect ed to accompany the sports finals, and with good weather ifi prospect, Fetzer Field stands may accommodate a record at tendance.
