Page Four CLOUDBUSTER—SPORTS Friday, June 1, 1945 Baseball Nine Wins One, Loses Another During Past Week Knocking out 16 hits and bunching them when they count ed, the Cloudbusters last Satur day trimmed Duke for the sec ond time this season, by a score of 12-8. Duke jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings, but Roy Talcott who was shifted from third base to handle the pitch ing assignment for the collegians, ran into a storm of trouble in the fourth and the ’Busters tied it up at 5-all. Lefty Lee Griffeth, Duke’s one-man mound staff, took to the hill at start of the fifth but failed to impress the cadets. His mates gave him a 7-5 lead in top of the sixth, but Pre-Flight promptly pulled out of reach with tying markers in its half of the sixth and another five-run cluster in the seventh. After Wayne Kreidler had been hit by a pitched ball to reach first, Ken Olson survived on an error by the shortstop, and Hoyle Chancellor singled to load the sacks. Then Ed Borowy hit safely to bring one in, and the bases were emptied shortly thereafter with a timely double by Frank Shaughnessy. The latter tallied the fifth and final run on a two-base knock by Tom Walsh. Jack Fouts pitched winning ball for Pre-Flight after reliev ing Harry Cromer in the open ing frame. One game each with Duke and Carolina remain on the Ration League card for the ’Busters who may play a deciding role in determining the successor to their 1944 crown. Tomorrow the cadets again will seek their first win over Carolina on Emer son field at 1500. The final league game for Pre-Flight will come on June 13, when the ’Busters travel to Durham to tangle with Dyke. In a non-Ration League game at Greensboro last Wednesday, Pre-Flight bowed to the strong ORD Hawks for the second time this year, losing by a 13-7 count. The Cloudbusters held a 7-4 advantage until the last half of the sixth when the veteran sol dier team, which has won its last nine games, exploded for seven runs to clinch the battle. The llR’s with 66, the 68th with 64, and the 70th with 61V2 were the only real runners-up in the games held at Fetzer Field and the outdoor pool last Friday evening. A feature of the evening was the soccer competition which found Lieut. C. J. Whiteside’s underdog 70th battling the ex perienced 65th of Lieut. Robert McLeary to a draw in two extra periods. With the score 2-1 for the 65th and minutes remaining to play, a ball intended for the 65th goalie on a kick from a team-mate eluded the former and skipped into the net. Two additional five-minute periods failed to break the tie. Albright and Weber starred for the 70th. Lieut. R. E. Peterson’s 65th hoxers won 6-3 over Lieut. Clyde Carpenter’s 68th. A well bal anced 68th swimming team, coached by Lieut, (j. g.) W. E. Dole overthrew the 65th by a 40-37 score. Pavelka and Forehand were outstanding stars of the 65th track team, the former taking the hurdles, placing in the hun dred, and running a fine relay lap. Forehand took the hundred and broad jump as well as being a member of the winning relay team. The 65th wrestling team, di rected by Lieut, (j. g.)
