Friday, July 13, 1945 Bond Sales Reach $91,000 Total In Closing Week Three Battalions, the 69th, the 70th, and the 71st, have distin guished themselves as top-notch War Bond buyers in the closing Week of the Navy’s Extra Cash War Bond Drive. The cadet regiment has pur chased $40,120 in bonds. Most spectacular was the show ing made by the 69th Battalion Which rose from 35.9% of ful filling their quota last week to 102.5% this week as the contest closed late Wednesday. The Battalions that were fight ing it out for second place were the 70th and the 71st who ended Up the contest with 71.0% and 69.4% respectively. Following are the standings of the other battalions on the sta tion as the contest closed: 66th Batt 14.6% $1,052 67th Batt 37.5% 2,250 68th Batt 51.1% 3,575 72nd Batt 28.7% 3,300 Refreshers 26.9% 4,300 Officers Play Baseball At Hogan’s Lake Picnic Among other activities at the Officers’ Picnic at Hogan’s Lake Wednesday afternoon was a base ball game played by a team made Up of members of the Academic department standing a team con sisting of members of the Mili tary and Athletic departments. This spirited match ended 8-5 in favor of the Academic group. Outdoor Dance Planned For Cadet Regiment An outdoor dance for the cadet regiment is being scheduled by the Welfare department for the evening of July 21st. The dance Will be held on the outdoor bas ketball courts east of Alexander hall. Refreshments will be served during the evening and dance iTiusic will be furnished by the Cloudbuster Swing Band. The dance will last from 2100 until 2400. ^ t'irst Concert on July 22 Date of the first in the sum mer series of concerts by the N^avy Pre-Flight band has been ^hanged from July 29 to July 22. Zubik, of the 70th Battalion, received the Air Medal for meritorious service as radioman of a carrier based plane in the Southwest Pacific. Comdr. James P. Raugh, com manding officer, who read the ci tation from Vice Admiral T; C. Kinkaid, is shown pinning the medal on Zubik. Cadet Zubik Is Awarded Air Medal For Meritorious Service in Pacific Cadet Arnold R. Zubik, 70th Battalion member from Rich mond, Tex., was presented with the Air Medal in ceremonies held before the cadet regiment here last Saturday morning. The award was made to the 21-year- old Texan for meritorious serv ice as radioman of a carrier based plane operating against enemy forces in the Southwest Pacific. The citation from Vice Admi ral T. C. Kinkaid, Commander 7th Fleet, which was read by Comdr. James P. Raugh, com manding officer, declared that “when the squadron commander was unable to locate an enemy force, due to inclement weather, Zubik skillfully operated equip ment locating them immediately. “By giving bearing and dis tance, he enabled the squadron commander to commence an at tack without being able to see the enemy. This enabled the commander to effect complete surprise, reduced the period of antiaircraft fire, and greatly as sisted him in sinking an enemy vessel.” Zubik, who entered the Navy in January, 1943, also holds the Navy-Marine Corps Medal which he was awarded in August, 1944. After boot training and radio and gunnery instruction, he went into the Pacific aboard an escort carrier, which supported land ings in the Palaus and Leyte, and which participated in the battle of the Surigao Straits and the battle off Samar. (jg) Philippe H. X. de Gaulle, 23-year-old son of the French leader, Gen. Charles de Gaulle, have reported to the Navy Pre-Flight School here for a four-week course of instruction in the Pre-Flight phase of the U. S. naval aviation program. This is the second group of French officers to undergo train ing here, although French cadets have been receiving instruction at this Pre-Flight School since May, 1944. The first contingent of 29 officers, has just completed their training at Chapel Hill and has proceeded to the Naval Air Station, Memphis, Tenn., for pri mary flight instruction. The Pre-Flight course for the French officers includes instruc tion in aerology, navigation, rec ognition, gunnery, communica tions, engines, principles of fly ing, and English, in addition to physical training. Thirteen of the new class of 30 officers have been decorated with the Croix de Guerre for heroic service to their country. They are Lt. (jg) G. H. M. Briel, of St. Nazaire; Lt. (jg) F. M. C. Open House at Carr Members of the 71st Battalion are invited to an “open house” by the girls of the Carr dormi tory, on the afternoon of Sun day, July 15th. The party will be held at the Carr dormitory and will get un der way at 1430. Party for Officers All Pre-Flight School officers and wives are invited to a party being given today by the French officers here in celebration of Bastille Day. It will be held at the Officers Mess starting at 1700.
